Hi all. I'd like some advice on my 4 and a half year old piggie pls. I took him to the vet on Saturday as his breathing was laboured. He saw a different vet to our usual one who prescribed .5mls of Baytril.

Now Eric is around 1.3kg, the same as his friend that he shares a cage with. Recently his friend Badger had impaction and was given Baytril also, but at .28mls

I guess my question is, does .5mls seem a lot? Or perhaps the vet would prescribe more in the case of a breathing problem? I only ask as I've never had to give my pigs as big a dose as this and Eric's tummy is a little upset even though I'm giving pro biotic also. I'm no expert by any means, I just wondered if this was considered a high dose in an older pig?

I think 0.5 mls is about right. Has the vet suggested you give it as two 0.25 doses, or just once a day?

Personally I think Zithromax is the better antibiotic for URI's, but see how it goes with the baytril. Make sure you give him probiotic though as Baytril does tend to upset the tummy.

Hi love............well 0.5mls is normal but twice daily BUT this was for my little guy.......why don't you pop in a call to your vets for confirmation.

If you're still not happy come back on here, as i'm sure we can all help xx

I'm no expert but just going by what i went thru for the past 4 + years xx

ALL THE BEST xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thank you. It's 0.5mls twice a day, that's why I thought it was a bit high. I don't mean to question the vet but I just wondered.

I'm giving the probiotic in his water but also syringing a little in and putting a few drops in his veg so there's no escape from it. Luckily, he likes the probiotic though, just not the baytril. He wriggles like an eel when I'm trying to get that into him!

Hi, when one of my pigs had a bad infection, he was on 0.4mls x twice a day. He had been started on 0.2mls twice daily but this was not clearing up the infection so it sounds about right.

As Debbie has said, give a sachet of pro biotic (mixed with water, I think its 30ml) throughout the day syringe appox 2 hours after administering the antibiotic, then as and when after that. It really does help their tummies.

Hope he feels better soon x

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.

Maybe the dosage is high to nip it in the bud quickly then hopefully. He certainly hasn't got worse, in fact seems a tad better. His appetite is normal. He's my oldest piggie and I'm so attached to him. I'm watching him like a hawk and I know he's fed up of me stalking him to check his breathing!

I really hope your piggy will be feeling much better soon. If it doesn't seem to clear it up, then I wouild definitely ask the vet about Zithromax. My vet now uses it for all respiratory infections as it has such a fantastic success rate. He initially started using it just for the no hope cases, and piggies who were desperately ill got better, but once he found it to be completely safe he now uses it more routinely.

You probably know this already but don't give him the probiotic within an hour of giving him the anti-biotic because, as we were informed (and it's quite obvious when you think about it) the two will counter-act each other.

Hope he feels better soon.

Marty

Thanks Marty, yes I did know about this, but the vet never told me that, I learnt it from here! I think that's why I worry a lot about seeing different vets etc. I'm not always convinced they give you all the info you need!

My little man had baytril at 0.4ml twice a day with 0.4ml ribena at the same time to cut through the sourness.

He wasn't very heavy though - about 600g.

Just wondering how Eric is doing love?
I'm hoping the baytril has kicked in and doing it's job......if not within a few days i'd ask for something diff like Debbie suggested :)

for little Eric xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Thank you so much for thinking of us Glynis :-) He is doing well, breathing isn't half as bad and his appetite is still huge. I'm pretty sure he's on the mend although hating me for the antibiotics! I'm extremely relieved so far. he's on the antibiotics until Saturday :)

Glad to hear he is doing so much better. 0.5ml is about average for oral doses of Baytril in respiratory problems. I always like to ask for a one-off dose of diuretic (Frusemide) at the beginning too, just to make sure there is no fluid in the lungs (relatively common in piggies).
