One of our piggies has just come back from the vets with a dose of Baytril to treat a suspected UTI, after we've found some spots of blood in his urine during his daily cage clean.

Now, my problem is, we've been told to give him 0.25ml of Baytril twice a day, dissolved in 1ml of water. When the vet nurse talked me through the treatment, she demonstrated how much we needed to give him on a 1ml syringe, and I'm now not sure - on reflection - she did it right. The picture below is of where she said I need to take the plunger to, which to my mind works out at 0.025ml, whereas the plunger's position in the second picture is where I think 0.25ml is. I'm rubbish at maths, by my own admission, but what do you guys think?

It’s very confusing. The first picture looks more normal to me if the first picture is containing the 1ml of water and the baytril but I’ve always been told to give the baytril neat and not with water so I’m unsure too. I have however given a little bit of sugar free ribeana with the baytril to mask the horrid taste. If the first photo isn’t containing the 1ml water, then the second photo looks a normal amount of baytril. Sorry I’m not much help but hopefully someone more experienced will be along shortly to answer your question

Thanks, Claire W. I've never been told to mix Baytril with water before either. But the first syringe is just supposed to show the pure amount of Baytril (e.g. no water) the nurse told me to adminster.

Oh no, that looks far too much baytril. If you are looking at mixing it with a syringe full of water, that would make nearly two syringefulls!

The second photo looks right to me but I would give the vet a ring just to double check but the first amount of baytril in the first photo looks far too much

.... Another way of thinking of this is.... 0.25 is quarter..... Therefore 0.25 mls should be 1/4 of a 1ml syringe

Ps - I wouldn't add water to Baytril personally. Apparently, it tastes awful. I imagine it'd taste just as awful diluted. If I have any guineas on Baytril, I give them some grass or coriander straight after to take the taste away.

Hi! I would just give the 0.25 ml as they are and then give something strong tasting like the same amount of ribena afterwards.

That's always what we've done previously. Today the vet handed off to the nurse to run us through the treatment as an emergency came in, but I think perhaps some confusion crept in during the handover.

I think may be you should mention the mistake the nurse made as an unsuspecting owner could have quite easily given the wrong dose although I do appreciate that mistakes happen
