Baytril Dosage Querie

So at about 2am I notice Shelly is squeaking while passing urine. Off we go to the vets!

Shes been given 0.6ml baytril twice a day, which is double what Leonard got? She was 1080g...is that right?

If its too much, as she has been given a dose at the vets already is there anything I can do to prevent it upsetting her guts? Thanks!
 
I don't know about the dosage. Have you checked that it's the same strength? Donald's just stopped a dosage of 0.7ml once a day
 
if it is 2.5% strength that dose is fine for her weight.
Did she have antibiotic by injection at the Vets?
If so, the Baytril should be commenced the day after the injection.
Give some probiotic about an hour prior to the Baytril and this will protect her gut.
Baytril tastes awful so I generally draw up a 1ml of vit c liquid or you can use orange juice then draw up Baytril followed by vit c again. Helps the accept it!
 
Ah thats it! Just compared the bottles, Leonards was 10.00 (I think..its really faded) and Shellys is 2.5%!

She was given it orally to show us how to do it, he was a locum..didnt like to burst his bubble and tell him I already knew how!

Thankyou so much, was worried for a minute there! She wasnt impressed at having the 0.6 shoved in all at once..poor thing. Will definitely use some orange juice, she seems to absolutely hate the taste of baytril, if you cant tell by her face!

Oh bless her :wub: I too have had a dabble of it accidentally, it’s like that stuff my mum used to dip my fingers in to stop me biting my nails :vom:

So am I the only one who wears gloves to handle baytril and then panics if I get it on me as I have no idea why I have to wear gloves?

It's more likely that we are dopey enough not to realise that it's a good idea to wear gloves :whistle::))

it is an antibiotic so no reason to wear gloves.
Different for Chemo meds or some ointments. x
 
My vet gives gloves and labels the bottle wear gloves! I wasn’t going to question it. I think the one in its original packaging that I have says the same.
 
Ah good old baytril. Donald hates it but then he also hates metacam and will raise his paw to keep pulling the syringe out his mouth so it takes a few goes to get it done :))
 
I still have no idea why and from my farm experience I can't imagine farmers wear gloves! We used to use a pump like a hand soap dispenser!

All I can see so far about it for humans is:
Individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to quinolones should avoid this product. In humans, there is a risk of user photosensitization within a few hours after excessive exposure to quinolones. If excessive accidental exposure occurs, avoid direct sunlight.
 
This might warrant a new thread but I'm not sure...basically shes now got diarrhoea. She had formed but soft poops before starting the baytril, now shes got a mucky bum but the only bit I can find in the cage is about 1cm..maybe shes eating it I dont know :/ but she is eating really well and has only lost 10g in 24 hours which is pretty normal? Her weight tends to bob between 1100 and 1030 anyway so 1070g isnt too concerning. Shes eating grass, readigrass, timothy and meadow hay, not so fussed about her pellets but eating bran, has had a small amount of veggies.

Main question is, should I stop the baytril and ask for a different antibiotic even though shes very well in herself otherwise? Shes stopped sqealing when she pees so thats something. She didnt get probiotics after her first dose (24 hours ago) because I'm bloody useless and fell asleep :( but she has had them an hour after the following 2 doses. We've got fibreplex here, bio lapis, burgess duelcare pellets and protinex pribiotic pellets as well as the oxbow digestive support tabs and ranitidine if necessary. Is it worth soldiering on while keeping a close eye on her, or is it better to swap to a different antibiotic?

Well scrap that, her appetite has reduced. We're to stop giving the baytril and take her in tomorrow, no appointments available but if we call first thing theyll let us know if theres any cancellations and if not they'll open up an appointment for us...just when I thought all my diarrhoea woes were over, the last pig I expected to get ill goes and gets ill! Poor little bean..
