Hi, one of my Guinea Pigs (Rocket) had a bit of a snotty nose on Sunday, I took him straight to the vets on Monday morning and they prescribed 0.5ml of baytril twice daily for 7-10 days.

Hes only 5 months old and only weighs 520 grams at the moment, much smaller than my other guinea pig. Does this dosage sound about right? I just wanted to check before I continue use.

I gave him the dose yesterday so he's already had 2 syringe loads of it.

Should I cut the dose back to 0.3ml?

Hes still eating regularly, He's had lettuce and red pepper today as well as his nuggets and hay. He's drinking properly too and there's Vit C in his water.

Hes still energetic and doesn't have any other issues except a runny nose and the sound of a blocked nose when he sniffs.

What do you think?

I have tagged in our medically most experienced members, so see what they say. Until then, I would continue with the prescribed dose.

I would not amend the prescribed dose without consulting your vet or another vet on the matter

@Mcgoughchris I'd check with your vet to see if it has been mixed with something.

I was once given the instructions to give a massive dose to a pig and when I questioned it I was told by the vet that they mixed with Baytril so it was a dilute version.

Ah I see! So it may be a watered down version.

I'll see if I can get in touch with the vet. If I continued with the 0.5ml there isn't a chance it could hurt my pig is there? You can't overdose on that much right?

We have never had any adverse effects with piggies on an accidental overdose of baytril.

Excellent that's put my mind at ease! I guess it's going to be more beneficial to follow through with the vets prescribed dosage if there can't be any fatal side effects and there's been no loss of appetite or lethargic behaviour.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the quick replies! Xx

Please don't change the dose without consulting your vet. Higher dosages won't harm but yes that does seem very high. It may be a different concentration as I know there are others out there. What does it say on the label about the drug. It should say something like 'baytril oral solution 2.5%' for example. The percentage is the concentration written in a different form to mg per ml.

I took him to a different Vet after the baytril was finished and he's been on a different medicine for a week or so now. He takes 0.15ml twice a day of this one.

He's very picky with food but eats regularly and plays/has tons of energy. His weight hovers between 480g and 530g throughout a week. It just keeps going up and down.

He still has clicking/heavy breathing but the Vet at pets at home said he might have that forever now.
