Baytril doses

Hello, I’m looking for advice please for the baytril does I’ve been given please. First got prescribed baytril for uti at 1.3ml twice daily for 7 days. Second vet prescribed more at 0.5ml twice daily for another 7 days. It’s a very big jump so I’m a bit concerned. It’s for uti & syringe goes from 0.1ml up to 1.0 . Thank you xx
 
Look on the label and see what the concentration of each one is. It's usually listed as ---mg/---ml
 
From memory 0.5ml twice a day sounds about right if your piggy weighs over a kilo but it depends on a few factors.
Do speak to your vet if you are concerned
 
Pepper was prescribed 0.5ml once a day for a tooth abscess. He’s over 1.1 kg. But it’s NOT a good antibiotic for this type of problem. Zithromax is.
 
Oh no! Thank you for saying this as had no idea. She’s already been on 7 days now needs 7 more. I’ve not heard of that 1 but will ask. Is it good for uti? Xx
 
Baytril is fine for UTIs. A week on antibiotics isn’t usually long enough to deal with a UTI so being given another course for another 7 days isn’t surprising.
 
We've routinely had 0.2ml twice a day but have been prescribed higher doses before for shorter times.
Baytril is the first antibiotic of choice for piggies but there are others available. Have you seen any improvement at all on the Baytril? And have they given you metacam or loxicom as a painkiller?
If you have UTI symptoms that are persisting have they also offered any x-ray?

Hi, thank you. She was first put on for suspected uti. Then no changes & I said she’s got stones so got an X-ray. The X-ray confirmed stone. Went in for removal but second X-ray found she had passed it thankfully but urine still showing some infection. Was given second course of baytril for another 7 days. She’s on metacalm also 🙂xx
 
2.5% concentration is 25mg/ml, so .5ml would be 12.5mg per dose.
My girls usually got .3ml of 22.7mg/ml concentration for UTIs, or 6.81mg per dose. My girls were about 750g, so small pigs, so about 9mg/kg per dose, and they would get it for at least two weeks.
If your piggy is a but over a kilogram, it would be an equivalent dosage, and I'd expect the second week to be required (one of my girls sometimes needed up to three weeks). If your piggy is a kilogram or under, it's a slightly higher dose, but not necessarily out of range and may have accounted for the shorter initial duration.

Keep an eye on appetite with antibiotics (any antibiotics), as they can cause some digestive upset (not just in piggies).

Hi, thank you very much for explaining. She’s eating ok thankfully. I know you can give buns a probiotic thing for when they are on antibiotics. Can I give my piggie anything to help her gut bacteria? Xx

Yes, a probiotic is a good idea when a piggy is on antibiotics.
In the UK there are several you can get - Fibreplex or Pro C For example
Better still, you can use the very fresh poops of a healthy companion to soak in water and then syringe the water to your poorly piggy. This directly helps to replace the gut micro biome

Ok, thank you for sharing. I actually have finreplex in I got for buns 🙂. Will also try the syringe poop thing xx
 
We did poop soup to help my girl with bloat. As my old male George gets impaction he is manually unbunged each night and he is thus a useful source of very fresh poop. So we mixed up some of 'George's marvellous medicine' and added a little to the syringe food she was getting to keep her guts moving and push the gas through - I can tell you when she got a taste she looked horrified! But it did help her. What a price to pay though, eh Louise? Fingers crossed for your girl x

George is used to being unbunged now. Just part of his evening routine. I used to have to flip him over and pin him down but now he is gently turned onto one side and reclines like a Roman emperor in my lap, eyeballing me while I raise a leg and poke around, and then bathe his bum in warm water.
We have an understanding, don't we George...

My piggy had an ear infection few weeks ago and she was on 0.2 twice a day for 7 days x

Hello George your absolutely adorable ❤️. He reminds me of my girl & she does this eye thing lol. George knows what’s coming but it’s for his best interests of course. I’m glad you found a way to help him xx
