Hi all as some of you know I took my baby guineapig to the vet last Tuesday. She prescribed Baytril at 0.05ml to be taken twice daily. I took the baby back last Friday as I'd phoned beforehand to ask for my baytril as I was concerned I would run out over the weekend. I have now been prescribed anti-inflammatories to go with the Baytril and she is putting on weight which is good.

The vet told me I had enough baytril for 29 days and queried the dose I'd been giving. I have been VERY careful to make sure it is the correct dose with no air bubbles but it's run out? Could it have evaporated in the bottle? It is only me administering the meds? Can I buy some more online?

Thanks for reading.

Ooooh 29 days seems a long time to be on baytril my vet said I hadn't to give it for more than 5 to 7 days even if there was any left i had to stop. you can buy it online Enroflaxin which I get for my rats but it is such a big bottle it starts crystalising once opened, so not economical except for long term myco rats, the one from vets doesn't dry up over a week or two, it does if left for months in cupboard, my last vet prescription didn't seem to have the correct amount dispensed in the bottle. but I had enough for 6 days.

Thanks fir replying. Sorry should have said 20 days. She is very little (165g when first went to vet). I may just have to phone them tomorrow She now weighs 190g ☺

Excellent she is gaining weight, usually a course of baytril is 5-10days at the high end, so i would question that. The bottle should tell you how many ml's where dispensed. You would have needed 2ml of baytril to last you 20 days at a dose of 0.05ml twice daily. If you dont have enough, just call them back and request they leave you more at the desk, but also ask about the length of the course x

Thanks Adelle yes it was 2ml prescribed. I really can't think why it's all gone?

Best to give them a call and explain you dont have enough left. I've been given antibiotics short several times at my last practice, i just called and told them they didnt give me enough, and how much more i needed. Xx

I had this problem. I was given what was supposed to be 2ml of Baytril which should have lasted 7 days, but I only got 5 days. I too was meticulous about drawing up the amount to administer (I'm a health care professional and do it all the time, so shouldn't get it wrong really!)

Thanks again Adelle and you too Anna. These guineapigs are certainly expensive at the mo which causes hubby to raise his eyebrows! He doesn't know how much the anti-inflammatories cost or the shredded paper bedding I've bought as I dont want any chance of dust (£17 )

Did you mix it yourself (i.e. get the Baytril separate from the base?) One of my pigs is on Baytril chronically as a suppressive antibiotic and I mix it myself... I can vouch that if it's not in an airtight container, unmixed Baytril can thicken/dry out. However, it takes a few month and this won't happen if it has been mixed with the flavored base.

There's no harm in Baytril longer for 5 to 7 days, except that it can be hard on their digestion. I have a pig who has been on a suppressive dose of Baytril for years. Some animals with a longer-term infection or problem will end up on more than a short course of antibiotics without any ill effects.

Hi Shirely I was prescribed this by the vet who also drew it up. Hubby went back in today with the empty bottle and the receptionist told him I'd been using too much! When he said no she then said perhaps they hadn't put enough on in the first place. Gave him some more and charged him for the privilege
