Hi everyone, My piggie Josie has been struggling to eat and not her usual self for a couple of months. after changing to a new Vets and appointments and x-ray later we are at the conclusion that she has lung damage/scarring from chest infections - she has a crackly chest. The Vet has advised a six week dose of Baytril...possibly on it for life :( She is eating some veggies and mashed pellets and a bit of Critical Care. If she is struggling to swallow I am not going to force feed her. She seems to have stabilised at about 650 grams. Has anyone else had a Piggie on Baytril this long? Did it help them? Any help gratefully received! Jane

I've had a pig on baytril with chronic congestion problems, also had scarred lung after he was hit with pneumonia, he had a constant crackly nose when I rescued him, the baytril would clear things up, only for it to come back a week later. He lived from to 6 years old like it.

After a while it will just become ineffective! There are much better antibiotics for respiratory issues too! My bunny, who died at the age of 10 1/2 had scarring on the lungs, due to pneumonia when he was younger. Twice daily frusol (a diuretic) worked much better than antibiotics for him, although he did occasionally need a course of antibiotic.

We rescued our spud from pets at home in August last year unbeknown to us she had a upper respiratory before we had her 2 days after being home she suffered a relapse since last August she’s been on off baytril constantly nothing clearing her up over Xmas it turned into phenomenon I was up 3 hourly feeding he4 critical care water warm mashed guinea pig museli I’ve never given up since Xmas she’s never completely got over her upper respitory infection her nostrils always run last week she started to go down hill again so of to the vets we went I had read lots of stuff on her about different antibiotics to try if baytril was working the longest she wS on baytril was 6 weeks with ronaxan thrown in to the accation also with the baytril every time she goes down hill she’s not eating drinking or mixing with her friends my vet wasn’t willing to try any other meds as he needs to do swobs to find exact cause of infection to which he would of needed to sedate her which as her chest and breathing were so bad she would not of made I read some many things on line her of what things to use rather than baytril I went in armed with names of antibiotics I wanted to use before he gave up on her last Tuesday she went to the vets struggling to breath snot pouring from her nose weight loss and generally unwell I asked the vets to put her on azithromycin / Zithromax and to just try for a week or 2 before just using the baytril which was getting us nowhere 3 months of baytril !, after 2 days on the new antibiotics it’s like I have a completely new pig she’s 6 months old never purred never runs around cage was being bullied as she was very sickly .. we are on day 8 2 days into the new boys and it’s such a huge improvement .. don’t get stuck on the baytril trap think baytil is a good starter antibiotic and it worked well when my other pigs have had lower respitory infections but it’s not been great for me for this stubborn upper spud has had it’s also quit a money spinner as they just give it when they don’t no what else to do any suggestions I’ve given my vet has been from on here and then he’s been willing to try not from suggestions himself and yes he’s a small animal vet so good luck with little one if they have told you yet you need to double up on the probiotics just to be sure there tummy’s keep working and maybe make sure you feed if there not at least 4 hourly as I did what helped spud to eat was also give her her fav veg parsley and grass I picked grass from the garden and just popped it into her mouth till she chewed xxthere first picture is a very sick spud she went from 7 graves to 6 at her sickest she’s not a healthy 7.4 Grammes and gaining xx
