Hi again! I am in the US, I introduced myself a bit ago but will give a bit more detail. I recently adopted two very ill special needs pigs. The first was a hospice pig and sadly had to be put down but the second, Marie, is blind , has respiratory issues, and is fighting pneumonia. She is currently on baytril and doxycycline but does not seem to be getting much better. We went to the emergency vet last night and they sent us home with a nebulizer and another course of the same antibiotics. She is eating but has heavy breathing and nose discharge. She will not take the baytril any longer, we know every trick and have tried it with her but because she is blind she is especially wild when being held so every time it gets closer to her nose she wriggles and screams until she is very distressed and her breathing deteriorates. We are trying the baytril in the nebulizer and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this? The emergency vet is not our normal vet but our normal vet is on vacation until the 26th. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

I’m sorry to hear your piggy is so unwell. Unfortunately you just have to be firmer when giving her the medicine. If possible you could wrap her up and hold while someone else syringe feeds. Or vice versa.

I’ll tag @Wiebke @Piggies&buns hope she turns the corner soon.

We’ve tried everything, wrapping her, holding her on a firm surface, holding her head so she can’t move. I’ve been giving meds to small animals for twenty years and have never encountered this.

Is nebulizing the medication not advisable? I have done it before with rabbits and rats but I know Guinea pigs may be different.

You must speak to your vets about administration of antibiotics. Not all medication can be nebulised. Please speak to your vet.
The emergency vet is the one who told us to nebulize it but they are not our normal exotic vet. Our regular vet is out of town until the 26th so I was just kind of double checking on here if anyone has an experience with this.

Hi! Unfortunately I have never come across a case where baytril has been nebulized.

Thank you so much! We ended up just doing the saline because I could not find anything about it and the vet we went to is primarily a rabbit vet. We are really lacking in exotic small animal vets where I live unfortunately. My husband is giving her the baytril because he is better at it. She still screams (literally makes the loudest screech I have ever head😫) and wriggles as hard as she can. My main concern is that she will inhale the meds and make things worse.

Don't give her any more than 0.5 ml (half a small syringe) at once; that is as much as she can hold in her mouth. Make a big fuss of her afterwards.

I know I'm late but just want to throw this out there yes baytril can be nublized i just wanted to post this incase anyone else was wondering my poor guy has a uri and our exotic vet has us nebulizing it.

My piggy Enid had chronic respiratory disease and had nebulised baytril during a URI. It was injectable baytril diluted with sterile saline and was mixed by the vet. I wouldn't advise doing this yourself without advice from a specialist exotic vet but it can be done. I found nebulising it had a much quicker effect than the oral baytil.
