hi all,
just need some advice on Boris's bumblefoot,i am using Perfect paws ointment twice a day and have been usuing it for over a week, currently his feet have probably gotten worse, they are at the point now where he is raising his front legs so he doesnt have to stand on them,i have given him metacam to help with any pain,i have a vet appt tomorrow to discuss treatment.
he will be on
Metatone
intrafungal
Vit C
I'm just wondering if Baytril is needed can i use it in conjunction with the other things?
thanks xxxxx

I have no experience of bumblefoot..poor Boris :(
Someone more experienced will come along I am sure. Are the feet infected? itrafungal is a pretty strong drug and personally I would be reluctant to use it and baytril together, maybe you can't as they will cause a reaction :{ I really don't know. What about an antibiotic cream? Hopefully someone more helpful than me will be along soon :red

thanks I'm not sure either all i know is that if the GG product isnt working then it must be bad therefore need something stronger,he needs the intrafungal as his fungal infect may have gone internal, but his feet are bothering him a fair bit and he doesnt want to walk because of it so i hope i can use both at once xxxxx

I can't say myself, but I hope somebody more expert is coming along!

All the best to Boris!

I think the Intrafungol (just in case brand names are different, the active ingredient is itraconazole) is a good one to try. Bumblefoot can also be caused by prolific fungal infections, although it won't deal with the bumblefoot now, and given Boris's skin condition I would certainly feel it is well worth trying this drug. It may make a big difference to his skin.

I too think Baytril and Intrafungol would be best given separately, you don't want to upset anything else in his body right now. In any case the use of oral antibiotics in cases of bumblefoot can be debatable.

Soaking his feet in a cool saline/salt water solution should help cool his feet down and soothe them. Once his feet are dry you can then apply a good amount of cream. Happy Soles ointment would be preferable for his front feet, rather than the Perfect Paws - did Chrissie send a sample of Happy Soles to you?

Bumblefoot can be extremely difficult to treat or cure. I would not give him Baytril for the simple reason that I do not think it is appropriate for his condition.
However, I would give serious consideration to stopping the Metacam and changing to Rimadyl which seems to be more a more effective anti-inflammatory drug. It is safe for long-term use.
