Hello everyone,

I know this is probably repeating in parts some threads by other people and I apologise in advance but here we go.....

I have a female guinea pig who is six months old. In April I took her to the vet as she was sneezing a lot and had crusty nose. She had the start of a uri but it hadn't spread to the lungs. I gave her .1ml of baytril twice a day for ten days. She was fine for the whole time she was on ab after the first day.

Then a couple of weeks after finishing the course she started sneezing again slightly. I didn't want to drag her out to the vets again so I phoned them, told them maybe it's early stages again? They said maybe she didn't fully get rid of it and she needs a longer course. They gave me .1ml twice a day for four weeks. Again she was fine again for the four weeks as it was only the beginning.

Now, she's been ab free since last Monday (10 days) now I'm noticing she's sneezing again. Little sneezes after she's cleaned, she finishes grooming, stands on her two back legs, cleans her face and nose and *sneeze*. It's like she always sneezes if she has no ab, like she is reliant on baytril!

She is absolutely fine in herself, scoffs her food, drinks, pees, poops, darts around the house like a mad thing. Popcorns mid way through running. Just this sneezing! What do you think I should do? A different antibiotic? Higher dose? She's only a baby to me and she just can't shift this early stage of uri!

Thank you in advance

There is the possibility that she has a dust/hay allergy, especially as the only symptom you mention is sneezing. What bedding is she on and what hay are you using?

She has newspaper, care fresh, and Timothy hay in her cage, her cage is always open and she has free run of the living room, (she is litter trained) then I change her cage every other day. She tends to only use her cage to eat drink and go to the toilet. The rest of the time she is wandering around or chilling under the table or wine rack on the carpet, which is hoovered daily.

It only seems to surface when she is not on the antibiotics. She has always had slightly glassy eyes but never streaming or crusty. The entire time she was on her medication I also noticed like a popping/clicking sound when she was eating her veggies. I mentioned it to the vet as I thought it could be that she has a blocked nose, breathes through her mouth but obviously if shes got a mouth full of food she has to then breathe through her nose, hence the popping. But the vet said that her nose was clear and that it could just be the sound of her chomping her food or something to do with her teeth, (she couldn't look at the back teeth she had a mouth full of food lol)

An awful lot of piggies have a little sneeze during and after grooming as the grooming fluid created by the oil gland secretion and tears mixing (known as eye milk) drains down the tear duct into the nasal cavity, often triggering a sneeze or two.

Which vet are you registered with at the moment?

Decent piggy vets in the area -

Shepherds, Bridgend - http://www.shepherdsthevets.co.uk/

Mark Bridges,Morganstown- http://www.any-uk-vet.co.uk/bridges-morganstown/hours.htm

Sarah Cook, Malpas Rd surgery, Newport - http://www.budgetvets.co.uk/index.php/our-practices/newport/

However for more complex, chronic or unusual cases I would highly recommend the top exotic vet in S Wales. Neath & Swansea
Lance Jepson - http://www.stjamesvet.co.uk/

Well she is registered with shepherds but also companion care. Shepherds I went to with her first uri and he basically said, when piggies get a uri they rarely recover and just keep having them. Which I find a bit odd because she is so young surely she should be able to kick a uri that hasn't gone to her lungs?

Should I wait and see if she sneezes more frequently or just phone a different vet now?

Thank you all for your comments so far xx

With the chance of a dust allergy i find my piggy Chester who has some allergy to dust and sawdust etc. lives on fleece but sometimes goes upstairs and pulls they hay out of his rack then sleeps in it and his eyes are very watery when he comes back down and he sneezes too, also if we're near the end of his nuggets and theres dust in the bottom of his bowl it can trigger it too. x
