My cousin also has guinea pigs, and one is currently being treated for a URI. The piggie was prescribed Baytril, but when I looked at the medication, the label reads that it is Baytril Otic, enrofloxacin 0.5% and siver sulfadiazine 1%, for ototopical use in dogs. Help me out here... is this even meant to be taken internally? My pigs have been given Baytril before, but it has always been mixed to their weight by the vet in the back room so I have never seen the original packaging... it just seems wrong that her pig is being given an ear drop orally, but I'm not sure if that's the norm since I've never seen what my pigs were given, other than the bottle I took home with me.

I have given her the name and number of my vet, since my vet specializes in exotics/small animals and I know firsthand that she knows what she's doing with pigs. This just doesn't seem right to me- looking for someone with more experience so I can pass the info along!

Are you sure they aren't ear drops? I don't know why, but I have a feeling "ototopical" is for use in ears:{ if in doubt, just ring the vet, but topical means just that-it is for topical application, not oral consumption... Unless there is some other unlicensed use for it!

I replied before I read all of your post (I finished nights this morning...half dead now!) but after reading the rest of your post, it just reinforces what I thought-that they are ear drops...unless, like I say, there is another unlicensed use for them...

Sounds like ear drops to me. Give the vet a call, they shouldnt be given orally unless the label is wrong or I'm being stupid. Best just to call for advice before giving the stuff.

x.

Yeah, that's what I thought too! I passed the info along again along with the name of my vet, who I know firsthand gives oral medication to be taken orally! Sad how some vets will take your money even if they have no real knowledge of what they are doing.
