Pheobe was taken to the vet's tonight, she was passing blood but we were not sure where it was coming from. The vet squeezed and checked all over her lower abdomen and couldn't find any abnormal swellings or lumps. She was given injectable baytril and an oral course to start on. With instructions to come back if no improvement. Does anyone know how soon the baytril will kick in. Thanks

Hi!

It can take between 1-7 days for an antibiotic to kick in before you notice any improvement; normal are 2-3 days. Please see a vet if there is no improvement within a week and sooner if she is getting worse instead of better.

Baytril does also impact on the gut bacteria. While most piggies are very little affected, some can react with soft poos or loss of appetite.
In that case, probiotics or poo soup (as fresh as possible, see link) can help, but you may also want to support feed.

Thanks, when I've used oral baytril before for a UTI I've normally seen an improvement within 2 days. I thought the injectable might be quicker. She has a follow up appt on Wednesday and has already started on the critical care and extra water.

We had to take pheobe back to the vet's today, (our usual not the emergency) he had another feel of her abdomen and thankfully couldn't feel anything. He also scanned her but again everything was clear. He prescribed he baytril, cisapride and meloxade. She had all of these at about 4:30 but sadly she seems to have become a little bit 'flat'. Still leaking blood and urine she passed a small clot tonight. Completely lost her appetite. Topping her up with, critical care, pro c plus water. She's even ignoring grass. Anybody got any other suggestions
