Hi there! My guinea pig Zelda was diagnosed with a UTI Thursday and was prescribed baytril. This is my first time using it. She was fine the first few days of it. She is NOT easy to get medication into. Last night I gave her lettuce and cilantro right after her nightly dose. She started making weird mouth movements like something was stuck. She still finished the lettuce. She went and ate hay and pellets later just fine. This morning I gave her some cucumber and a vitamin c tablet to see if she still did it. She was fine. However, I gave her a dose of benebac and she made the movement again. I am obviously going to call the vet Monday, but could she be nauseous and making these movements? Sorry if that's a stupid question. I hope I didn't cause her pain trying to syringe her meds. 😥. I am hoping it's not a separate tooth or mouth issue. Her front teeth are normal, but I realize that doesn't mean the back are. I don't feel anything around her jaws or anything.

My boy started making a funny mouth movement when he had hay wedged between his front botton teeth. I guess this could happen in the back with some food

She just did it a little with leaf lettuce, but not the whole time. Ugh. I hate to bother the vet if it's nothing, but I don't want to miss something either.

I would go vets and get it checked..try not to feed nuggets a day before so that the vet can actually see the teeth

Baytril is very bitter and not many like the taste, she might just be trying to get rid of the taste maybe? When in doubt, go with your gut and get it checked out though. It could very well be the start of a tooth spur or something.

Thanks! I will take her back to the vet. She is sitting eating hay with no problem. I don't get it. I would think if it was teeth it would be constant, but maybe not. I was afraid maybe she bit her tongue or cheek when I have been trying to get yet medicine in her. She is so squirmy! She has never made this movement before.

All of the piggies that I have given Baytril to, make a weird movement like they are trying to get the taste out of their mouth because it’s nasty, some of them have even pawed at their mouths to try to get it out. If it is just at medication time it might be that, if it’s at other times I guess it could be something else.

It's strange. She doesn't do it for water, hay, or pellets. It was just leaf lettuce last night and this morning. It was after the medicine. However, the benebac was a couple of hours later. I am still going to call. He can use the scope to see if anything looks suspicious and needs further investigation. I just hope I didn't make her bite her tongue or cheek or something trying to get her medicine. She is finally not fighting me so much. She will take small amounts then grab and throw the syringe 😂. Only 6 more days. Hahaha. Poor thing.

She may be trying to get the Baytril taste out of her mouth. It is bitter and a lot of pigs don't like it. When we had to give Hadley vitamin C drops, she made a very exaggerated 'yuck' face because she didn't like the taste.

I have an appointment for tomorrow. She ate some lettuce today with little problem. I gave her a piece of bell pepper and she had trouble. 😥. She hasn't lost any weight. I am so worried about having a guinea pig with teeth problems. It came on so suddenly.

I am at a loss. Just got back. My doctor did see anything wrong with her teeth! I don't get it! Her inscisors are beautiful, which I knew because I do weekly health checks. He weight is fine. Her appetite is a bit off from the baytril. Her molars look great. He didn't feel anything along her jawline or anywhere. He said to keep monitoring her and if anything changes we will be back.

Try not to worry, you know what you are doing and what to look out for. And you have an appointment booked so all will be fine :)
Thank you. I am a worrier. I also have the worst luck with pets. At least in the past so I always go straight to worst case scenario. I can't help it. I always say no more pets. Here I am with 6 piggies and two cats. Haha.

Must be the nasty tasting baytril then :vom:

So far for the last two days she has not made the movement with any food. I am hoping that maybe she just had something stuck or got poked or possibly hurt during the first few days of wrestling with her to give her meds. Her appetite has been better the last couple of days too. 🤔
