I've had a pig with a head tilt for some time. He started out with an upper trachea infection and was put on baytril for this. I noticed his head tilt a few days after. It is getting progressively worse. I have used otomax for his ears but didn't seem to make a difference. He is now back on baytril and otomax, he has had a head tilt and some balance issues, and now he's sort of sideways walking. He's eating drinking and keeping weight fine, active as usual. We are considering using panacur, but I am convinced it is an ear infection so trying the baytril first. Would it be worth trying zithromax next ? He has been having ivermectin pipettes, xeno500 monthly for awhile to prevent mites ect. He also had some flaky skin on his ear when I first got him, but this cleared with otomax very quickly. As I'm sure you can imagine I'm very concerned about him. It's been going on for a fair few months now. I have probiotics on the way to give with the baytril. He's about 900grams and only on 0.15mls of baytril. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly welcomed.

Hi!

Has your vet considered e.cuniculi?
Please also be aware that using ear drops on spec can make things worse when dealing with an inner or middle ear infection.

Please do not use ear drops, it makes things worse and the ear just ends up being a soggy mess inside. I think you need to get him seen by another vet, who will prescribe a better antibiotic. Often the head tilt doesn't completely resolve, but the infection goes and the guinea pig adjusts to having the head tilt and becomes totally unaware of it.

I was told to by the vet, sadly he's had a bad reaction and begun to roll about, she told me to stop if he did so won't be using it again. The panacur was suggested in case of e.cuniculi, however I'm more inclined to think ear infection at the moment so wanted to try baytril first.

I actually work with the vets, hence why I've been using them. Unfortunately I work eight hours a day every day excluding Sunday so very tricky to get anywhere else!

If you are unable to get to another vet would your vet consider a change in antibiotic to Zithromax? I know it can help with head tilt in some cases. Also recommend a course of panacur as mentioned above.

I'm sure they'd be fine with that. I'll try the baytril and panacur, then give the zithromax a go. Am I fine to use the panacur and baytril at the same time? How long should I try each for before stopping if I don't see improvements?
