Hi,
My guinea pig had blood in his urine last week and we were told to give him 0.25ml metacam twice a day for 5 days. We did that and then a few days after stopping he started squeeking when weeing. We have been back at the vets today and have been prescribed Baytril for 10 days. But it says to wear gloves and wash hands afterwards. I don’t have any gloves, is it very dangerous to humans...? Do other people wear gloves when using Baytril?
Thanks

I must admit I was told this last time I was prescribed baytril and it came as a shock as I don't remember being told that before. I don't bother wearing gloves but if the vet recommends it it probably should be done. I just make sure I'm careful and wash my hands before and after

I think maybe it could be a contamination thing? Not sure. Best wishes for youre guinea pig 🙂

Thank you both for your replies. 🙁 We have only had them 4 weeks and have been at the vets 4 times with them with urinary issues. Today the vet said that actually it may all be being triggered by stress, she said that it’s unlikely they would both have stones at 18mths old. They are also loosing weight too, we are beginning to think they may be better suited to a different home. 🙁 They are indoors but in our main living space and with a busy family I wonder if this is just too much for them.

Any ideas...?

The Baytril isn’t going down very easily - I didn’t expect it to though! Are there any tricks? Someone on a very old thread here suggested giving it to them with a bit of an Ella’s kitchen pouch to take the taste away. Has anyone else done this?

He’s on 0.95ml once a day, for 10 days, does that sound right? Is it roughly what others have been prescribed. He’s 1.19kg. The vet didn’t seem overly confident with handling him so I am just checking the dosage sounds right.

Baytril is very bitter to taste. Only The Ever Beautiful Betsy likes it as she is a straaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaange piggy! Christian hated it when he had to have it after his op last May. I quicky followed his dose with some Metacam and he learnt to take it as he would get something tasty afterwards. Is your piggy still on Metacam? If so do the Baytril first and then the Metacam. I have never heard of gloves having to be worn with Baytril but maybe it's a new recommendation.

Yes still on Metacam, another 10 days of it. He absolutely loves the metacam and it turns into a tug of war trying to get the syringe off him!
Tonight’s Baytril turned into a battle and I don’t want him to associate the syringe with feeling scared. 0.95ml is quite a lot to get into a non-compliant piggy in one go (i.e. lots of little goes, but one dose).
Thank you!

Take heart - you are doing a great job with your piggies despite the stressful start.
Baytril is awful - Miss Ruby would like to share her Baytril face with you:

We tried with lots of different things, but ultimately get it done and then offer nice things.
They really do forgive you eventually.

Wow she hates it with a passion!

I've gotten instructions to wear gloves with chloramphenicol on the rare, RARE chances to it can lead to aplastic anemia (it's not a 'human consumption' drug in my country for that reason- though it's still used by humans in some other places because the chance of it is just SO low.) I've never gotten that instruction with Baytril, even though I actually used to get vials and mix it with the base at home for a pig on long-term suppressive antibiotics. I suspect it's just a recommendation they give with all meds or to prevent contamination and nothing specific to Baytril itself.

Thanks Freela, yes hopefully it’s just that and nothing more serious. If it were that bad they wouldn’t let people handle it anyway!

I’ve never been advised to wear gloves but I always make sure my hands have been thoroughly washed before and after handling.
I also make sure I have a suitable bribe on hand for afterwards - dill works for mine.
