Our Young piglet bless his little heart is poorly again this time he has an ear infection (vet said middle ear)anyway he has a head tilt which makes him look goofy but all the more cute with it (he knows how to extract sympathy off people) Anyway the Vet Prescribed 0.16ml doses of baytrill twice a day until the amount runs out about 10 days worth. Unfortunatly Piglet has had other ideas he hates it he knows exactly what a syringe is and wont let anyone feed it to him. any ideas for fooling a super smart pig? the vet also said the tilt may be permanant so anyone with a tilty guinea pig ? are they harder to look after will i need to make special arrangements for him

Hi, oh gosh sorry to hear about your little man :(
Try wrapping him in a small towel or teatowel, do it firmly but not too tight. Make sure you have the syringe filled up first with the baytril so you don't have to juggle anything ........ try also dipping the syringe tip in juice, then gently but firmly pop the syringe into the side of the mouth and squeeze in the baytril. I also use a fresh syringe and give them water or a juice mixture afterwards to get rid of the taste.
Best of luck and keep trying :) and try to stay relaxed :)

i kinda wont give him the choice about not having it he does give evils for hours after though he still wont talk to me now and i gave it him an hour and a half ago he can be so moody. p.s. he is a runt of what ever litter he is from hes only little and can be susceptible to most things but we love him and hes a happy thing mostly

An ear infection is pretty diffcult to reach with the normal piggie anitbioitics. i.e. Baytril....#

TBH......A cavy savvy vet would probably not have selected batyil in this instance as the best choice.

First of all..you need an experienced vet to rule out ear mites (treatment ivermectin 3times every 2 weeks plus ear drops to relelase the "gunk")

If not ear mites...and therefore an infection/abcess....then septrin is the a/bioitic of choice....for 3 weeks...but even that might not work in the ear.

If your vet doesn;t know what the **** is...the piggie may need a full exploratory op of the ear canal under GA ( I aM about to make that decision on one of my piggies who has had head tilt/ear shaking probs for the last few months and septrin hasn;t sorted it)

Bottom line is ..is your vet cavy-experienced enough?....,because this will/should be your next step. ...ie eptrin for 3 weeks.

If you have any worries about your vet's experience then it;s worth getting a second opinion. Whereabouts are you....we will hopefully be able to find you a really cavy savvy vet for a second opinion.

sorry i didn't think my post had gone thru mallethead
offer him a treat of parsley or lettuce afterwards too, then he'll get to know he at least gets something nice later!

Good advice from Pebble :)

So far..I haven't found a cavy savvy vet in Lincolnshire. And from going on reptile/avian (ie other exotics forum) it seems there is little "Lincs exotics experience" to be had :(

However I have found this vets

but i don;t know them and can;t guarantee their expertise..

If you are willing to travel for a second opinion....(or register with Cambridge Cavy Trust......it's worth it for £30... am a member and I use them for all dental work and also work with both them AND my local vets for other piggie probs)....... I'm sure we can help arrange a piggie train....just let us know.....

poor boy. Just wanted to add that baytril strips the gut flora so it is always a good idea to give probiotics at the same time. Hope he's better soon x

My late pig Garry had a torrid time with health issues, an inner ear infection/external abscess being one of them. Zithromax cleared him up in no time. A lot of vets won't prescribe it, but it does work wonders. If your vet is willing to give it a whirl, then do try it. My vet is currently off work with a broken leg, although I'm sure the practice would be willing to speak to your vet if you wanted their details?

try making appointment with Vedra, in our case she's helped more than all other vets we've seen all together; it's only a couple of hours away from where you live, but at least there will be a result
