Hi everyone,

Baytril for 6-10 week old boars, one who has a URI and the other who's stressed. Dosage twice a day for 10 days. Does this sound ok, I read somewhere that Baytril shouldn't be used on young boars?

Also when will you know URI has cleared up or should you have a check up when course has finished which will be in 6 days?

Finally a good exoctics vet in Colchester would anybody know one?

Thanks for your help.

What probiotic would you recommend and where could I get some on the way home tonight?

Thank you

I would recommend bio lapis from your vet.

Watch affected appetite with baytil and see your vet for an alternative if it happens straight away.

Hi Andywilson,

Year ago, both my 10 weeks old piggies had URI and I was given Baytril. This is a strong antibiotic and for such a young GP it shouldn't be given. It can interfere with growing up, alternative should be Bactrim, which is safer with GP (I've read somewhere that Baytril used to be accredited to use on humans, but after reported hallucinations after taking it, they moved to animals use only). Unfortunately, vet didn't know anything about Bactrim and I had a choice: trying to fight URI (bad one, they couldn't breathe) with Baytril or wait for Bactrim. I think you know the answer.

Now, one of them have a inner ear infection and again, I've got Baytril for 10 days, but this time I know it's OK, as that infection is really bad, so he need stronger antibiotic.

Don't worry through, just keep eyes open on any unusual pops (no diarrhoea) and give him an Pro-biotic + vit C, that Claire W pointed out, and is in Pets @ Home, same as me (we did used last time, and we are using now) and it should be OK. I give them about 2h before serving them wet Romaine hearts leave with sprinkled Pro-biotic on it. I hope it will work like the last time.

Good luck.

Actually, having said that I have to pointed out that both of them are ex P@H pets and within days they had URI. Year later I found 2 pets with the same illness in the same shop. When I've pointed out about them, they promptly took them away and (as she told me) put on Baytril (even she knew what that was ;-))
