Humphrey has a confirmed URI (thanks marmite!) anyway last night when giving him baytril we noticed that an hour after the dosage a crusty deposit had formed in his lips it was all a mucus colour. Was it snot/phlegm or dried baytil? it wasnt there before the dosage and despite access he hadn't drunk in 8 hours

Sorry, can't help with the baytril/crusty deposit but didn't want to read and run. The only thing I can suggest is before giving him his next dose make sure his mouth and nose area are clean and then check him a little later. Generally pigs with URI can have crusty bits around their nostrils - a bit like us with a cold.

As regards the lack of drinking, I assume you have a 1ml syringe for the baytril, try giving him a little water with this - just make sure you wash it out thoroughly first as the bay doesn't taste very nice. You could also offer wet veggies to increase his fluid intake, i.e. wash lettuce/cabbage leaves and leave them wet and cucumber and melon are also good.

Hope you see an improvement shortly.

I noticed this when my cleo had baytril, so I think it does dry a bit crusty. I would syringe water too just to be on the safe side, because vet told me that crusty lips can show a little bit of dehydration too, so its better to catch it early using this as a potential sign. Hope humphrey gets well soon xx

Hope Humphrey is feeling better today.

I don't know about Baytril because ours have never been prescribed it but, generally, if you miss their mouths they can get crusty edges from medication.

A good way to tell is this, if you've had your Baytril bottle a couple of days, is there a little bit of crusty stuff around the threads at the top where the bottle top screws on? (does that make sense at all even?)

What I mean is, when you open and close the little bottle, there will be Baytril on these threads. Does this go crusty and does that crust look like what's around Humphrey's mouth?

yeah i think it was it hasnt done it since well his appetite is coming back still not seen him drink yet but he is getting 'wet veg'

Drinking is not a major issue if Humphrey is getting water from his veg. I remember when first got Caramel, he didn't drink for the first month! he couldn't figure out how to work the bottle and he was getting loads of grass and wet veg :)

It was only later when we reduced his veg that he had to learn how to use his bottle (he still drips most of it on the floor though).
