So Rufus had his big day today, travelling to see Jenny Towers (who I loved!) & he had his back teeth slightly trimmed although original vet had done a good job apparently. Front teeth trimmed cos had regrown in a week. She discovered an abcess under one of his front teeth which she thinks is maybe why he is not happy eating. So he has Baytrill to try beat that off, and some pain relief. I gave him pain meds soon as we got in & he has already had a little something to eat since so he seems bit happier.

Anyways, my question is, he detests baytrill. I have mixed it with a bit of fruit juice to disguise taste but he still gets stressed about it.

How much fruit juice should I use with 0.4ml baytrill? And any tips? Just want to make it a bit less like a torture session!

We used around 0.2ml of sugar free ribena at one point but found it made no difference, no prefer the speed approach. One of us holds the other syringes following up with a leaf of favourite food.
Find it's easier just to get it in rather than mix it.

All piggies hate it and fight against you, you just have to be cruel to be kind, my boy was on baytril for weeks and we got in a routine in the end, i would sort of cradel him like a baby and syringe it in followed immediately by a green leafy treat to take the taste away. But only cradel if you are confident enough as it can be dangerous if they inhale into their lungs.

Good luck xx

They do dislike the taste of Baytril. The Septrin I was given for Freyas poorly toe was banana flavoured and she loved that. I couldn't get the syringe in quick enough! :))

Forgot to say my boy was on baytril also due to a dental abcsess and it worked very well, aswell as much draining and flushing out, we got there in the end, If you need any help and advice on critical care, syringe feeding or anything else not eating related, just ask, there is lots of help and advice available! xx

Yeah this is the thing I was told to keep all 4 legs grounded to avoid it going into the lungs but he freaks out! I can't follow with leaf he isn't eating much at the moment ;/ hmm ok just have to persevere makes me feel terrible it's a proper torture session!

Rufus lump is quite hard, she thinks it's in the bone. I'm worried it's cancer... But then I am cancer obsessed cos I just lost my dad to it. Vets say he's quite young for that & that it'd be quite rare to have tumour there ;/

Abcsesses are hard to begin with, as they ripen they soften and can then be "popped" thats how it started with my boy, i thought his tooth was growing into his jaw, but it was an abcsess, they all of a sudden appear and get quite big and soft quite suddenly. Please try not to panic lovey, its a horrible time but you'll get through it, this is the exact situation i was in with my biy earlier this year. Have you tried him on banana, parsly, a little bread, a biscuit? Slightly softned pellets?

Please weigh him daily and if he is losing you'll need to syringe feed either critical care or mushed up pellets. xx

Would also advise giving him his pain meds first, as he's unlikely to want the syringe straight after having some Baytril. Can someone hold Rufus while you syringe it to him? Very sorry to hear about your Dad. x

Sending Rufus lots of healing vibes x

When giving medicen I always sit cross legged on the floor with a blanket over my lap, I have spice (my piggy) tucked into the dip between my legs, facing towards my left knee, I let him rest his two front paws on my hand (palm side up, so my hand is cradeling his front) but his back legs are stood on their own. Then I slip the syringe into his mouth and squirt (a little at a time at first, but he soon got used to it and too all 0.4ml). I found dipping the end of the syring into a veg they love worked better than ribena for me (so cucumber, or melon etc) as thats a familiar smell and the blackcurrent is still alien.

Might not work for everyone, but it works for me.

Ah glad you said an abcesses are hard first, I imagine all sorts ;/ I do give the pain med first, and he is getting soft pellets which I just came home to find him munching which was a nice surprise! He does get banana but not tried bread. He has oats at times I was advised to give oats to build his weight up. He is now eating very finely chopped tomato but just seems so fussy he turns up his nose at most. He won't touch grated carrot either yet usually loves carrot.

I don't understand why he will eat poop but turn his face up at nice veg?!

Banana is a good weight booster as is a little bread as they are both high in calories and soft so easy to eat, glad he was eating his soft pellets, if he wont eat hay you could try some fresh grass.

Tried grass he isn't interested but I'll try him again. Will def try him on some bread... He has eaten more than normal tonight although he is still eating poop. Do you think he is replacing his lost nutrients?!

Yes, believe it or not, there is such a thing called poop soup..... where you mash up some poops and syringe them to him.

Not to much bread but a little if he will eat it, all my boy would eat was parsly, rich tea biscuits, bread and banana when he was poorly, all of his favourites went out of the window, he hated critical care unless it had mashed banana in it, he didn;t mind the burgess blackcurrant and oregano nuggets mashed up though, so i was feeding that every 2 hours around the clock! Are you giving any probiotics and is he drinking? If he isn't drinking you will carefully need to syringe water to him to keep him hydrated, baytril can be really harsh on the guts and put them off their food and probiotics help to settle their tums and keep the gut moving. Below is the link to my thread from when my boy was ill, it starts from the first day when we didn't really know what was going on, to his recovery, there may be some helpful tips, advice, links etc for you, and may settle your mind that you will get there with him, you may have to force feed him, and put horrible medicines in his mouth, you will feel very cruel and horrible, but it saved my boys life and if i had to, i would do it all over again. If you were closer i would offer to help/take over.

my piggie is on baytril for a uti , i have been mixing it with a pure smoothie which is banana . mango & passion fruit, she seems to like it even though its only a drop mixed in with the medicine, i wrap her in a towel & then the other half holds her & i syringe it into the side of her mouth bit by bit,
she seems to be getting better, i have also bought a probiotic powder from pets at home to put in her water as baytril can be harsh on the gut. hope this helps.x

What pro biotic should I buy? The vet said I could buy it is stores if I wanted? He is not yet having trouble with appetite his appetite seems to be up at the mo & he is eating little chopped up bits of tomato grape banana & cucumber. Also oats & his pellets soaked in water.

I can't feed him every 2 hours I have to go to work ;/ but he is picking up & eating more so something is helping...

Will check your story thank you for the advice! Helps to kno you've been there before! x

its called pro c probiotic by vetark , its a powder , its has a little scoop so you just add the dosage to the water bottle, simples.
the vet didnt tell me to use it but i read on here about using it when they are on baytril as it upsets their tummies & i think it generally gives them a boost
nothing wrong with my piggy ! she's currently scampering around the run in my living room with her piggy friend rolleyes

It's worth learning how to towel wrap them if you need to give them medicine/syringe feed etc.

From Peter Guerney's A to Z:

T
You simply stand the guinea on a firm surface, drop the towel over the body, up to and over the shoulders, gather each side of the towel up and under it, then wrap as you would a babe in swaddling clothes. Most guineas put up a bit of a struggle but most settle down as soon as they are safely secured.

Make sure you tuck the legs in. Unless you wrap tight, the front legs invariably come out, but you can hold the pig with confidence. I usually hold them vertically to syringe medicine. (All ours have hated Baytril, Matacalm on the other hand can be given by putting a drop on a fingertip and let them lick it off!)

Thanks for the advice guys, we have a new game! It's called bite mummy's arm cos we don't want medicine ;/ little monkey.
