My poor 10/11 week old Beano has a swollen back toe that is sticking out a bit. I noticed it this morning. He is moving, eating and acting normally but with a big red toe. From advice on previous threads I took him to the vets this afternoon (I was thinking it was an infection) and she suspects it's broken! Not sure how! He had an injection and now we have to give him metacam once a day for a week and go back.
I took him and Dennis to the vets - for company, and having been fine all day, since returning home he has hidden under the tent in his run and looks very sorry for himself.
Any tips gratefully received. Esp on giving the metacam!

Hi , well done on quicly responding to this , it is sometimes dificult to identifie a problrm like that

Metercam
what dose ?

if drops , then hold his head fermly but genterly, with his insisors facing towads you and drop on to insisors
he shold swallow it without any troble
if a lager dose, then a 1ml syringe would be handy, (the syringe that comes with it will be no use)
Drop he required amount onto a tee spoon and draw it up onto the 1ml syringe and give it to him

Pigs heal amazingly quicly and hopfully he shold be all healed within a few days, but during this time keep
him quirt and keep a regulare cheq on his poops as metercam can somtimes upset the tummy

He has 0.3ml of metacam and they gave me a 1 ml syringe so should be fine as long as he takes it!
He hasn't moved a muscle since we got home - not eaten or anything. Hopefully just unhappy about the injection he had and being prodded about by the vet. Bit worried now!

They're usually pretty good at taking metacam, as it tastes nice!

Place your hand on top of Beano's head with your thumb and pointer or middle finger firmly holding the head on either side, and then use your other hand to put the syringe behind the teeth. 0.3mls can easily be squirted in one go, and will probably be easier and less wasteful!

Is it 0.3ml twice a day, or once?

He is probably just a little unnerved by the vet visit, he should pick up soon. The metacam will also help if he is feeling miserable from pain (I've had a broken toe, they are quite sore!)

0.3ml once a day. Thanks for the advice, feel much better about giving it to him now. He is back in his hutch now and chewing some hay! Thanks for the reassurance xx

Hope he feels better soon! :)

Poor little guy. That must be painful. But as everyone says Metacam tastes delicious to piggies. Even my most uncooperative madam will have a bit from the syringe without me having much trouble. Hope he soon feels better

Just to back up everyone else, he should take the Metacam easily. One of my girls is on Metacam for an eye problem and she likes the taste, I must say it smells very sweet!

My Ellie was a metacam junkie- she would lick it straight off of the syringe, or putting it in her mouth like the water bottle spout usually, ripping the whole syringe from my grasp &throwing it with her mouth when it was empty! Aww :luv:

Hope his toe soon mends. Ive broken fingers and toes &they are both very painful. Healing vibes xx
