it seems the boys have mites I'm just wondering if Beaphar spot on is ok for guinea pigs? it says it is but i wanted to check first ;D

Have never used it before, I would think it is. How do you know your boys have mites? :)

they are all baldy and scabby :( iv seen mites in rats and it looks the exact same :(

Yup totally safe for piggies. The dosage depends on the pigs weight, it specifies how many pipettes they need on the back of the box. This is what I've used on my pigs. If they have quite a bit of hairloss and scabbing already then you will most likely need to treat them more than once. The second dose should be 7-10 days after the first or you won't get rid of them properly. The box says they are covered for 30 days but thats only in a preventative situation.

Yes it's fine to use even if they don't have mites, although I think I read somewhere that it's not a good idea to give them it every month as they can become immune to it and it won't work anymore.
I do mine whenever I think they are scratching a bit more than normal or their skin looks especially pink.

It is fine but it is fiddly and is an underdose for pigs that are over 1kg.

I would take to a vet if it's gotten to the stage where there are open sores.

That is what I was thinking. It would take to long to heal just using this product. The guinea by the sounds of it needs some aggresive veterinary treatment. That is why I asked for a picture. :)

I didn't realise it was an underdose for pigs over a kg. That's a pain, one of my boys is 1100g. Hmm may have to look into usng a different source for ivermectin.

sorry no pic tonight my mum has just fed them and tucked them up for the night.

sorry if i sound a bit rude here i dont mean it honest but its exactly what the vet uses, when my rats had mites i phoned the vet and said i had this stuff and she said its what we use just do it once a week for 3 weeks and it should clear up and it did :)

also nappy cream is amazing for any itchy scabs. (i used it on two rescue rats before and it worked wonders :))

if the guinea is under 750gs you use 1 pipette over that you use two. bailey is 1kg 25 grams and the babys are around 500gs now(need to do a new weighing for them)

anyway sorry if i sounded rude, sadly for the many rescue rats i have i know what I'm talking about with mites :(

You don't sound rude at all, however, my personal opinion is she needs treatment for the mites (an injection probably being the best option) and antibiotics as it has gone scabby. An once it has all cleared up some medicated shampoo to treat her skin and fur. That is my personal opinion. :) Not to sound rude either but if you know what you are doing then why you started the thread/ asked the following:

Yep, it's exactly what the vet uses but it's a much weaker version of it. This means that you have to use more of the liquid. Using the calculations on the GL site (recommended veterinary dose for mites) you need to use 3 of the little pipettes for a pig that weighs a kilogram. I can vouch, having tried it myself, that it makes one heck of a mess with two tubes let alone 3 - the piggy gets absolutely soaking! Read our discussion on dosing the Beaphar product here - http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?p=698087&highlight=#698087

I would definitely be wary of using this liquid if the skin is broken - would think it would irritate it more if it was applied to a sore area. Don't get me wrong, it does work on mild cases (just scratching, minimum/no hair loss) but I would seek vet advice (probably a course of injections like CC says) for Bailey's more advanced case or try and get hold of a product you can dose more accurately.

Hope that makes some sense!

Agree, with daftscotslass. In such an advance stage she needs more then Beaphar spot on. :)

Its much weaker in strength its only 150ug vets use 450ug strength so you need more pippets than it says on the box. I have used it and it does work. But it is cheaper and more affective to use xeno 450 spot on from the vets or have them give it by injection which costs £4 an injection they need three every 7 to 10 days sometimes a fourth is needed if its a bad case. All your piggies will need to be treated too ;) Hope your piggies gets well soon.

guineas arent my fortae (if thats how u spell it lol) they are actualy my mothers i just help out when i can, doing research etc. as i said rats are my thing, and i have just gone by what i have learnt with them ;)

my oh has just informed me we have a bottle of invect from the last rescues i took in (they came from the vets with really bad sarcopic mange mites and we had to treat them plus cover my own 10, so the vet just gave us a bottle) i will phone the vet in the morning see what she says.
and i will try get a pic of my moody moo bailey.

today i sat going through his coat for ages (describing the best i can) he had light to medium dander and one small scab behind his ear then on his underside, his hair seem to be thining just between his front legs nowhere else and a few small scabs scattered in that area.

as for the babies they have really thick rex coats so it was even harder to see! but whiskey had a small scratch behind his ear too but i couldnt see anything on his under side.

i think i may have over reacted on my earlier post about being so baldy hes not turning into a skinny pig or anything. and I'm sorry if i seemed rude before I'm not very well at the moment and over emotional. i appologise :'( :'(

No offence was taken, my main concern is Bailey gets better. Keep us informed. O0

oh blah i forgot to get a pic...typical me lol i phoned liz today(my vet) and she nipped up when she was on her lunch (shes a family friend lol) she said its very very mild just now, so she gave him and the others (inlcuding the rabbits because they have the same hay) a jab for the first week and then we have to do the spot on the neck 1nc a week for two weeks starting next week. :)

It's good you have had a vet take a look at them. You are so lucky to have a family friend who is a vet. Keep us updated. O0

sometimes i dont think I'm lucky when she turns up with some poor ratty who has been taken in because the owner didnt want him/her anymore. ;D ;D

i will do tho
