i have recently took in 3 guinea pigs although one was baldy on her side, the woman thought might been mites from straw was using on rabbits. i took her anyway as i couldnt seperate her from her sisters :) i have not used straw but instead give them guinea pig friendly bedding and timothy hay.
i cant see nothing crawling on her but i read online mange mites can burrow under skin, she not scratching much but is still baldy on her side. i have treated her with beaphar spot on as contains ivermectin & put bit of sudacrem on her skin. she seems happy in herself and I'm sure can see abit of hair regrowth starting but was wondering when i should apply another pippette. shall i wait 4weeks apart or is there anything else i can use.
the other 2 guinea pigs are absolutly fine but I'm worried they might single her out.
any advice appreciated thanks :{

Welcome

Congrats on your new additions, how old are they? Baldness on the sides can be a sign of ovarian cysts....

It would be best to have them checked out by a savvy vet anyway to make sure they are healthy and not got mites etc, the can also feel for any cysts, do her nipples look enflamed/swollen atall? Is she humping the others?

hi, thanks,
they are approx 2yrs old. she lost more hair the first days spreading to by head but not spread any worse since. her nipples look normal but i did have to double check they all female as she was following one the others around alot which it wasnt happy about squeaking. i will take her vet to be safe though.x

It will be best to get vet checked to be sure either way, as if it is mites it will spread quickly and effect the others, the vet may want to do a skin scrape to check for mites, but don't worry, it doesn't hurt them.
Do mention the ovarian cysts though, a good vet should be able to feel them usualy otherwise an x-ray/ultrasound may be required.

Good luck, please keep us updated and bombard us with pictures :)) xx

Thought I would add, I have used the belphar spot on but its not as effective as you think it would be. I have now changed to a better spot on thanks to advice from suzygr. Although over the counter shop brought stuff can do the trick, if you have a persistant problem or are not sure, its best to seek vet advice and proper treatment. My vet trip cost me £12 and I am now seeing the results of correct treatment on poor crystal and her itchy skin, a very small price to pay for a happy pig.
