Hi guys

As you know, Pepper passed away a few weeks ago. Beauty seems fine alone so for now he's going to stay alone - I think this is what's best for him right now but if circumstances change then I'll have to rethink. I know some pigs aren't happy alone but he seems perfectly content.

Pepper and him shared a C&C cage which is 5.5 x 2 with an upper level of 5.5 x 1. Beauts seems okay for now but it just seems so big for one pig and he isn't using all of the space, he runs around the top level like a crazy thing and has loads of fun up there but I think he might find the bottom a bit overwhelming?

What do you guys think of making the cage a bit smaller? Or maybe I could buy a cage? I'm thinking I could get something Nero 4 sized which would be fine for him and not too big? Anyone have any cage recommendations and if you have a single pig - what cage are they in? I think I may make the C&C smaller for now and then maybe buy a new cage in the future (I know I don't need to but I prefer cages, it's just that no cage is as big as what I wanted).

Thanks guys.

My opinion is that if you are going to get a new cage for him, then the bigger the better, and I would go for the Nero 4. I had my two girls in a Nero 4 and they were fine, but you could do so much for one piggie like giving him a hay ball, and a cottage, and making it interesting. Also I think they are marvellously easy cages to clean out. I had Basil in a Nero 3 and he was o.k. in that, but with hindsight, one size up may have been nicer for him.

Thanks!
I'm thinking a cage instead of a C&C would be nice - mainly for cleaning purposes like you mentioned. I do like C&C cages and I think they're fab if you have multiple pigs but with one pig I think you can buy cages that are fine for them. I've been looking at the Nero 4 and have a lot of ideas about how I could make it nice for him.

Are they any other cages similar in size to the Nero 4 I can take a look at too?

Yes, I'm sure the Nero cages can't be the only ones, but I stuck with them once I found them - I even had a Nero 1 (the small size) as an emergency hospital cage. I've seen some wonderful C & C set-ups in the Forum, but you're right, for just one piggie I think the "ordinary" cages can be just as good. Whatever you decide, will you let us see pictures in due course - although I know you're still in the "planning stages"

I have a few single boys and they are mostly in Ferplast 120's or Nero 3's in the case of some of my golden oldies who never move anyway!

Thanks - will have a look around a few websites I think.

I do have some zoozone 2s (100cm x 50cm) but I don't like the idea of pigs being in plastic cages like that?

i'd stay with your cage and buy some houses and maybe have the bottom level for running and houses/tubes along the back and top floor feeding/drinking along the length of the cage front. add some interest! i find having zones helpful

Yeah i would stay with your sized cage as well... I have no idea whether piggies feel like other animals do but maybe he would like being in a familiar cage still since he lost his friend? And put more places for him to make the downstairs more enclosed...?

Also if you do decide to get another friend then you wont have to dig out the old cage as it is already in use!

Hi Jane, i'd do what you think's best, you know him! There's no point having a cage that big if he doesn't use it, you could give him all the toys in the world and he'd probably still just look at them. I know my boar never uses space or toys, he just likes to sit, eat and sleep! The likes of nero 4s and ferplast 120's are fine i think for a single pig and a lot less hassle to clean out
