one of my piggies Ginger has been on Baytril for 12 days now as he had a head tilt which the vet said was an ear infection. He's been doing well, the head tilt has more or less gone and he's been much more himself, still eating well throughout.
However this evening he seems to have taken a turn for the worse, his head seems ok still but his back legs don't seem to be working right. He is walking around the cage a bit and ate his veggies but is chuttering his teeth.

I will take him to the vet in the morning but was wondering if this could be a side effect of the Baytril making his legs a bit slow or if it's likely to be the ear infection come back or something else again?

sometimes chuttering can mean piggies have pain.the ears do have a mechanism that controls balance, but i would get him checked at the vets.I'm sorry ginger is having a difficult time hope he is on the mend soon.i hope someone from health and illness team can give you a more thorough answer.thanks Eileen.

Thanks for replying Eileen.
I will take him to the vet in the morning. It doesn't seem to be his balance that is the issue this time but his back legs but I could be wrong.

Definitely agree, chuttering the teeth is a pain response, please mention your concerns about pain when you go.

just thought this may be usefull ,

Treatment varies depending on the severity of the disease. In mild infections, oral or injectable antibiotics in combination with topical antibiotics and antifungal agents are often used. In more severe or chronic cases, the eardrum may need to be surgically incised and the middle ear flushed and treated. In some cases, more invasive surgery including removal of part of the bony covering of the ear (bulla) through a lateral or ventral bulla osteotomy may need to be performed. In very severe cases, complete removal and closure of the entire ear canal (total ear ablation) may be necessary. In cases where tumors, polyps, allergies, or other factors contribute to the cause of the infection, they must also be properly identified and treated for the entire treatment to be successful.

Please have him seen again today. Any deterioration needs to be seen. Ear problems are very sensitive things are they can affect other issues like balance, mobility and pain. Your vet needs to also consider whether other issues are playing into it.

Definitely get him seen again. Like Wiebke says, any change needs another appointment. It may be that a different antibiotic may be more effective for him, and it certainly sounds like some pain relief could be investigated. It is also a possibility that the head tilt isn't just an ear problem and if now involving other parts of the body, it could be neurological or some other more systemic problem which a vet needs to look into.

Good luck!

We went to the vet this morning and Ginger has has another check up. By this morning it seems that his problem with walking was due to the ear infection as his head tilt has reappeared. He has been given some anti inflammatory medicine and another week of antibiotics and the vet will see him again after that.

I have been giving him pro c sprinkled on his veggies but is there a better probiotic I could give? I went to P@H but that was all they had. Got him some Timothy hay which he is really enjoying so hopefully that will put a smile on his little face
