Theyre 3 weeks now and were still feeding off one of their mummys.. think the two mummys take it in turns from what i could see.

So i'm getting them saturday.. will they be weaned by then? bit confuzzled lol

just to add they are soooooo cute x)

3 weeks is young to rehome them

my local pet store wont sell them til 8 weeks

Most piggy mums start weaning around 3-5 weeks by increasingly discouraging the babies to drink from them.

They are boys, correct? If so, they should be removed from their moms now that they are 3 weeks otherwise mommy may get pregnant! This would usually be when weaning happens for boys.

Later for girls.

Hence one of the reasons piggies are not usually rehomed untill they are 6 weeks.

i think taking them at 3 weeks is a bad idea, starting to separate should start at 3 weeks not fully separate !

The weaning age for males is 3 weeks, however the rehoming age for babies is 6-8 weeks as long as they weigh a minimum of 400g.

All reputable rescues will only allow babies to be homed once they have reached this age and weight. I would be hesitant to accept guinea pigs below this age/weight as they have not been seen to be able to thrive once weaned.

Homing at below 6 weeks is not OK.

The weaning age is 3 weeks for most, some wean at 4 weeks, though as the earliest documented mating that resulted in a pregnancy is 24 days it is recommended that 21 days is best, if they have reached a suitable weight (200-50g).

As long as they are sexed correctly and the males separated when weaned then there will not be a problem.

Personally, I would be wary of a rescue that rehomes babies at only four weeks old, but everyone does things differently. However if babies arnt seperated from mom at 3 weeks old, and even more if they arnt seperated before they come home to you i would be very concerned! Teeth problems in particular are hard to pick up untill after weaning along with other issues.

Perhaps have a chat to the lady about why they can go so young and ask about how long they will have been away from mom before you take them home.

just a quick update, i have decided i will not be collecting them until 6 weeks and min weight of 400g. they'll be worth the wait. I dont want to upset anyone or do it all the wrong way and thank you so much for everyones help. :rosex

Thats ok, You wouldnt be upsetting us, we just want you to have all the facts. :) I know its hard to wait (I would want them too) But, iif for any reason there was something wrong with their teeth say, they will be with an experienced person who can pick it up. Not that you wouldnt notice, but presumable the rescue lady will have more experience with babies. Then when they do come home you will be sure they are thriving without their mommy. :)
