2 Weeks ago my dog picked up my guinea pig whilst I was out, it was only for a second and when shouted at she gently put him down like she knew to be careful with him. ( This all happened whilst I was out and my mum and dad were home ) He was taken straight to the vets and was kept overnight until he came out of shock. There was no visible damage but he was pescribed pain killers for possible bruising. He obviously wasn’t himself for a few days and I was syringe feeding him, he went for another check up last Thursday and the vet said he was fine and his definitely picked up. But his just still not his normal self, his usually very vocal and full of life but he just seems to lay down a lot and be a bit quiet. After the incident his wee really smelt to and he was wet around his bottom but thats all cleared up now...his eating and drinking normally but feels like his lost weight. Just worried i’m missing some underlying issue or is he just a bit stressed I dunno. It’s like he just doesn’t like me anymore! And I can’t find a vet that specialises in guinea pigs near me!

Does he have a companion? Whilst it sounds like he’s not over the ordeal yet he could be lonely. Weighing regularly could indicate a problem if there is any weight loss. Without a cavvy vet it’s a stab in the dark I’m afraid. I hope he gets better.

Hi!

Guinea pigs can die from fright; your boy sounds like he had a very narrow escape and he has reacted very strongly to it.

Whenever you worry, you switch from weighing once weekly as part of his routine health checkover to weighing daily at the same time. 80% if the daily food intake is hay, which you cannot control otherwise. Kitchen scales from the supermarket are perfectly adequate.

Please make sure that your dog cannot get into the room and that you are ideally not smelling all over with dog when you handle your piggy as long its prey animal instinct are on full tilt.

Is he your only piggy or has he got a mate to cuddle up with and get moral support from?

He has a younger mate which I introduced him
To about a month ago after his mate died. They seem to get along fine! His new mate is still a baby so it either really shy or zooming around everywhere!
