I was clipping nails today and noticed one of Belle’s nails has broken off and has a scab over it. Will this heal ok on its own? Should I clean it with anything? I touched it a lot and she didn’t seem to be bothered by it, more just the usual “don’t touch my feet!” Behaviors.426A3478-6B9C-48EB-8918-8B11A9BCA094.webp1727572E-ED0D-4503-9E49-EF2AC6D01967.webp

Ouch poor Belle. I haven't dealt with nails breaking off so I'll let someone else advise you. Hope she's ok

I’ve seen it with some of the piggies who have come into rescue where they have either caught a nail and ripped it our or broken a long one, They usually heal ok on their own but a couple have come back looking rather odd in colour (think the quick grows slightly longer into it?) or a bit twisty. As long as she’s not in pain and there’s no sign of infection it’s usually ok. But if you think anything looks swollen or possibly infected then it’s wise to get her checked by a vet

Caspy's was a bit swollen when he pulled the nail out. I rang the vet and she advised Metacam for 2 or 3 days which helped reduce the swelling. As Claire says it took 5 or 6 months for the nail to grow back. I'd keep a close eye on her and go to the vet if you are worried.

Ouch! It happens not all that rarely.

All you can do is disinfect the site if the rip is still bleeding and otherwise wait for the nail to grow out again.
The nail may eventually grow out thickened or somewhat deformed or in extreme cases never grow out properly again depending on whether and how badly the quick was damaged.
Thankfully, it won't impede mobility.

Hope Belle is ok.
Jemimah managed to tear a nail out on her very first floor time.
Worried me but she was fine. The nail grew back within a few weeks
