Right, 3 new piggies - all with 'run away' function fully in order - arrived last night. I said a quick hello once they were home to introduce them gently to the kids and hub - this morning the smallest, a PEW called Pickly Quing, seems to be refusing to weight bear on her back left leg... I'm keeping an eye and will be taking her to the vets later if she shows no signs of improvement....
So, my q is - what could she have done to her leg in a Ferplast 140 with no levels and nothing to fall off (although there is stuff to bump into like her food bowl). I've given her a gentle look over and there's no obvious damage to the leg she just seems not to be using it. It's not being held out at an angle or anything....she's just a tripod this morning....are legs a common injury in GPs? Should I presume she's in pain if she's not using it and give her Calpol or should I just watch her - thing is I don't know if her mood/eating/anything is out of the ordinary 'cause I only met her yesterday:(

Typical me... urinary infection for the FTGH rat last week so straight to the vets, now a hoppy piggie straight after she arrives. The vet'll start thinking I have the hots for him!:red

Well, some vets are rather....let's leave that bit! :red

At the moment I would wonder if she sprained her leg a bit while showing off that 'run away function' - in other words, tried to run too fast/slightly twisted the leg a little as she's run.

How old is she? If she's over 6 months I'd be inclined to give a one-off dose of 0.2ml infant Calpol (not the 6+ one) or children's Nurofen and see how she does over the next few hours. Have a thorough (but gentle) feel of the leg, see if there are any sore spots on it, if not it may just be a general sprain which just needs a few days and restricted space to heal.

Thanks for that Laura... that would make perfect sense as her space here is bigger and a bit skiddier (fleece over plastic but they've re-arranged somewhat overnight - rather than shavings over wood) and she's been used to the previous arrangement at the rescue since birth and she's 18 months old so she just might've been having a dash about and done herself a mischief...

I'll get that dose of Calpol in her now and see what I can see.

Poor little thing though... what a start!

Thanks again Laura - if you were closer it'd be chocolate hob nobs and a cuppa in gratitude8)
