Hello,

On Thursday, my piggy Ben passed. He had 2 siblings, and one is taking the loss very hard. They used to live together as babies, but when they were teens they had to all be separated due to fighting (blood was drawn). But they all had C&Cs that joined so they could always see each other and cuddle at the divides. Bertie has always been an independent piggy, so he didn’t pay much attention to the other 2. But Billy and Ben had a very close bond, even though they couldn’t live with each other, they were still very close.

Billy’s appetite is down a lot. It’d slowly been decreasing while Ben was ill, but only over the last 2 weeks. But since Ben’s passing, he’s really not had much interest in food. I’ve been hand feeding him, and I was hand feeding him with Ben while he was still here. I’ve tried to tempt him with lots of goodies, but he’s not so keen. He’s eating hay, and drinking, which is positive, but he doesn’t each much in one go. He looks sad, and he keeps calling for Ben at the divide. I’ve moved Bertie in to Ben’s old living section, but Bertie is just not as social as Ben was, and I’m worried he’ll never give enough companionship that Ben have Billy.

I’m going to take him to the vets on Monday to be absolutely certain he’s not got anything sinister going on. But has anyone noticed similar behaviour in a grieving guinea pig? Also, I was thinking of adopting an older companion for Billy to live with, do you think it’s a good idea even though Billy still has Bertie? I’m in panic mode right now, I’ve already lost Ben in difficult circumstances, and it’d break me to lose Billy so soon after. Thanks in advance for help.

Also, does anyone have any vet recommendations for South West London please? I rang my regular vet today to book an appointment, but they informed me their exotic just moved and they won’t be seeing guinea pigs anymore (my usual was Bromley Common Vets). I don’t drive, so ideally they have to be within about 10 miles of Crystal Palace. Thanks.

I’m sorry for your loss.
Ensure you step in with syringe feeding and weigh him daily so you be sure he is getting enough hay/syringe feed. It is good if he is eating some hay independently, but you need to ensure it is enough and weighing him is the only way to know.

In terms of a new friend, character compatibility is the most important part and dating at a centre allows for them to choose their own new friend. However, if he is really struggling, then you may not have the option of waiting for dating at a rescue centre to become available again and may need to look to other options (a youngster from a pet shop for example). However, ruling out a medical issue is of course the first step to take.

I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully you will find a vet to see your boy soon.

PS is the vet at Bromley Common moved away then?

Thanks, I’ve been keeping an eye on his weight (he’s lost a little so I’ve upped his hand feeding) and I’ve checked the vet locator. I was just wondering if there might be some recommendations that weren’t on the list (I should have given more details - my fault).

I was just told today that the exotic vet has moved away to Hampshire (I think?). I only saw her a few weeks ago, so it’s quite sudden. It was always a comfort knowing that there was an exotic close by, so now I’m feeling a bit more anxious without that security net.

We go to Anne Nelson in south Croydon, we have only been for a check up but they do have someone there with a small animal qualification, also very reasonably priced too! There is also CJ hall in Richmond Ino it’s a little further away but they have more specialism on guineapigs one of our Instagram friends goes there.

Oh no! My boy was there a short while ago and I registered the girls there. Oh well, I'll have to use the other one then. It's too far away from you though.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at both and give them a ring on Monday.
