I am very relieved that Nye 'Noble' has bonded with one of my several tricky sow pairs now that he has come out of deep mourning and is open for another relationship.

His first choice (heartily answered) would have been Nosgan lookalike sweet natured Betsan/Boots, but as she is the first piggy that has been accepted by my dumped ex-single Beryn 'Candytuft' after 1 1/2 years of trying, splitting up the pair is not an option. Nye and Beryn did get into dominance tussles very quickly and Beryn was tensing up badly again, so that was a no go.

I then tried Nye with my very skittish stuck in rescue pair from Milhaven Guinea Pig Rescue, dominant mother Hyfryd 'Lovely' and timid/fear-aggressive daughter Hirael 'Long Brow'; they had been neighbours of Nosgan and Nye for a number of months and got on well with the boys even though any 'husboar' dating attempts with the sows in the last 2 years have failed.

Much to my relief, the two ladies have remembered and accepted Nye. I have left them in their bonding pen in the kitchen overnight to allow Nye and Hirael to work out the roughest bit of dominance between them before transferring them to their cage this morning with minimal fuss. It is the boys' cage but with the girls' soft furnishings.

Hyfryd and Hireal bracket Nye in age; they are all between 2-3 years old and will hopefully grow old together now.

PS: All my Tribe boars are neutered; if necessary as soon as possible after their arrival, like Nye. This to prevent babies from any accidental meetings but also to allow me as many options for finding new company as possible if they lose their companions.

Such great news. They are all adorable!

Next time around (!) I want a neutered boy with some girls. I love the idea of letting them “love the piggy dream”!

I would recommend to adopt a boar or rescue date one to make sure that they get on. By far not all sows will accept a 'husboar', especially when they are over ideal pup bearing age whereas younger sows are generally very accepting.
Consider which dominant piggy you want to build up a group around and then stick to piggies that cannot challenge the existing hierarchy.

My boars love being with sows but they also enjoy doing 'boar stuff' through the bars with each other. They have their own boar hierarchy over the whole colony by measuring up with each other through rumblestrutting displays. I think allowing them to lve out both sides is the happiest of lives but of course not everybody can do that.
It is a revelation to witness the moment a boar realises that he is living the dream with a sow group and the sheer happiness of it!

That’s really interesting thank you. I’ve got years ahead with my two boys I hope, but they were rescued and my next ones will be too, I could never do anything else knowing how many piggies are out there needing a home.

I meant “live the dream” before of course.

I always worry a bit when my two rumble strut but I’m slowly learning it’s just normal boys being boys behaviour (so far nothing worse phew). So funny. My two are about 8/9 months old now and I have to say they still seem to swap dominant roles, it’s certainly not obvious who is the main boy yet.

Lucky boy Nye! We all love a piggy wedding and a happy ending :)

So happy Nye has found companionship again after losing Nosgan.
You must be relieved too

Very relieved; especially as I am not having to look to adopt even more piggies right now. I really want to reduce the number since I have so many pairs that take up more space and time than having a few larger groups.

It was worth waiting until Nye was open for a new relationship and also taking my time with the bonding and not rushing them to their cage. Since they know each other well from the time they have been neighbours for a year, post-bonding dominance is minimal. Laid-back Nye has simply and seamlessly inserted himself into the group.

I am just so chuffed and relieved that for a change everything is going to a (long laid) plan and that for once I am not having to add to my high number by looking for a suitable match elsewhere for him...

Fantastic news!
I too try and get piggies into groups as the number of cages determines how much work there is to do. Plus it's always good to have groups so that piggies are not left alone when their cage mate dies. Hoping that Nye and his girls have a long and happy friendship
