Since having to say goodbye after a rough illness to Sudoku on Monday, I have had to go back to the vet but with Barney Bubbles who did live with Sudoku. Barney B is struggling with a gassy, swollen tummy, is sore on his tummy, little bit of weight loss and is doing 'toothpaste' deformed poohs. I have got gut stimulant, Zantac and metacam from the vet so trying that but I am anxious about him. He did eat a lot of Sudoku's poohs so I assume he is missing that intake of gut flora? Also he is moving around less because there is less stimulation without a piggie to play with :(. He hasn't shared a cage with Sudoku for a couple of weeks but he did visit S in his hospital pen.
Worth trying pooh soup from one of my other healthy boys?

Oh no, its relentless for you Laura. Poor BB. Yes l would feed him some pooh from healthy piggies, probably give him some Avipro on his food, or maybe some fibreplex. Try to get him to be more active and massage his tummy

Thanks for asking about him B.
He is bit better I think - mixture of soft poohs and a few more normal looking ones today. Still hard work to get him moving about more but he is in play pen now and is pottering. Tummy still swollen but maybe less so? Will keep going with tummy regime and no veg. He is not impressed with missing out on veg.
I think the piggies are out to scare me this week when I am still wobbly after losing Sudoku - Theo has just been looking like he was gagging this evening - turned out it was a piece of hay stuck on a tooth!

They certainly know how to scare us. Glad BB is settling down a bit. Oh for a week without vet visits....

Update (not that this was ever much of a thread to update) Still not got Barney Bubbles right. Even a very small reintroduction of veg causes very soft poohs and gassy tummy. Am I being impatient when it is a gut issue?

its a slow steady progress, ive jerry still with bloat, ive given zantac twice a day for two weekd, now I'm giving him one dose on one day,two doses on the next, will reduce it slowly whilst increasing his food intake.he is running rings around me as to which veg he wishes to eat!Really hope BB gets better soon.x

Gosh Laura guinea pig>s health is so unpredicatable. My youngest Amos gave me a scare a couple of weeks ago. He wasn't his normal bossy self at lap time. I gave him his usual locust bean treats but instead of chewing them enthusiastically he turned his back on me after a couple. I had given him some grass earlier and I noticed his stomach was quite swollen not his usual svelte figure. There were no signs of his poops either which was a big concern as he is a super sized pooper normally. I massaged his stomach lightly and then let him run loose round the kitchen to try and encourage bowel movement. I could also keep an eye on him as I did things in the kitchen. I have no idea if this was bloat related but his poops started to appear round the floor. Not at his usual rate but they were there. He improved in himself and became his usual self again next day.
I hope Barney improves and you can relax a bit. If you ever want to try Bunny Guinea Pig pellets let me know as I get a huge bag and there is only Amos who eats it. I could easily give you a plastic bag of the pellets to try.

Ok - that makes sense - I too am weening BB off the meds - down to 1 lot of Zantac per day. I will try to be patient! It is probably feeling a long time because we are both missing Sudoku and there is that strong urge to look after the lonely pig with favourite foods and yet he can't have any veg! He is eating hay right now so I just have to let him mend in his own time. Hope your piggie mends soon too.

Thanks Val - I know they can scare us at any point! Glad Amos sorted himself out...Thanks for offer of sample of special food. I have ordered some other grainless pellets to try also. I can just see us exchanging suspicious bags in the vet's car park:)).

Yes I was thinking of the vet's car park for distribution purposes. It could look pretty suspicious on their security cameras.
I also have a HUGE Allen and Page Muesli mix sack that I got for Amos when he was not eating. It's in the kitchen and I have to be careful when I let Badger lose as he tends to try and climb in the end I opened. So if you ever want to try either I can bag some of that up as well!.
