Hi everyone, I lost my 6 year old himmy Thorn today . He left behind his brother Moose. Obviously, I am concerned about how this will affect him - he is eating well, but they were quite nervous piggys, and stuck together like glue. As Moose is 6, I am loathed to have him castrated, or introduce a young boar. I have been advised that at his age, he will probably be sterile. Is this right? It's just that my Mum has 2 girl piggys - one is also 6, and the other is approximately 3-4. Is it safe to put Moose with these two, despite none of them being neutered? If someone could help I would be grateful, as I need to decide what to do for my boy x PS. Sorry if this is a really stupid question!

Hello Hobbit

Guinea pigs (male and female) remain fertile all their lives, many people have made the mistake of thinking that they lose fertility and end up with an aged sow having a poor outcome due to the pregnancy.

You could consider boar dating at a reputable rescue with an age appropriate male. This link shows the Piggy Bank UK rescue map - many offer boar dating and should be able to oversee the bonding for you so that you go home with two happy boys that have chosen to live together.

Each pin on the map can be clicked for rescue website details.

Don't risk putting them together. I'm sure he'd get on with a baby boar, he could have another 3 or 4 years left if he's a healthy boy and I'm sure he'd love to have a friend to keep him company. So sorry for your loss, I know how difficult it can be thinking of new friends for piggies left behind when you've just lost one. x
