Hi
I have a single female piggy who has just lost her mate. I've brought her inside to the garage while it's so cold outside and am desperately looking for a mate for her. I have a few questions
Should I be considering a male mate or just stick with looking for a female?
Can I keep her in a windowless garage while it's cold?
How doni set up an area for her ro run around in the garage?
Can't have her indoors as my husband is severely allergis to them or the hay...not sure which...if it were the hay I'm wondering if we could have her indoors but no way of finding out.
Any ideas of where to find a female mate and any tips on bonding?
Thank you so much

Welcome to the forum and I am sorry for your loss.

Looking After a Bereaved Guinea Pig

It’s not ideal being totally in the dark for a long time but while it is very cold, it is definitely best that she is in there to be protected from the elements. Lots of hay and heatpads to snuggle into.

A playpen or normal outdoor run can be used for her to have an exercise in the garage. Make sure the garage floor is covered so it is warm, cover the top of the playpen/run with a blanket to stop draughts, lots of hay and heatpads etc.

Temporary Housing Solutions?

In terms of finding a new friend, she can have either another female or a neutered boar as a new friend. What is important is character compatibility.
The best way to find a new friend is through the help of a rescue centre. They can help ensure compatibility and assist. At this time of year, rescues close to new adoptions to stop them being adopted as Christmas presents so you would need to explain it is for a bereaved piggy as some will still continue with adoptions in such situations.

As the bereavement guide I linked in at the top explains, provided she is otherwise ok (eating well etc), then they are usually ok for a few weeks on their own while you make necessary arrangements for a new friend, so don’t feel you need to rush into anything if she is ok for now.

If you cant use the assistance of a rescue centre for bonding, then this guide explains how to carry out the bonding yourself.
