Just noticed Bernie has been squinting in his right eye whilst eating hay. He is eating fine, at the same pace. Still active. Just seems to have some irritiation to his eye. Have checked the eye ball, no cloudiness no injuries i can see. But the out skin inside looks a little red.

I will take him to my vet asap. No open today, will not take him to any other vet.

Any ideas? What it could be?

Front teeth are nice and even and inline. Hope its not molars

Have him checked for a potential conjunctivitis or a tiny piece of hay caught under a lid. A non-ulcerating hay poke cannot show up at first and be masked by a watery film over the eye.

Ok thanks il book him in as soon as i can. Do these things ever self fix? Just checked him again and its not squinting whilst eating now. Havnt noticed any watery film over the eye. Can i flush it out with a 1ml syringe and some safe boiled cooled tepid water?

Haypoke?
That sounds like Jemimah when she had haypoke a few weeks ago.
Let us know how you get on at the vets
Did she go to the vet? I'm worrried a bit, il get everything about his eyes checked, i dont think he has much sight, even for a guinea pig. He could never seem to pin point where his veg is from the start. Comparing to Dot, where she is very good at following my hand for veg

Yes - we went to the vet who checked her eye with a special dye.
I came away with eye drops and a check up appointment a week later.
It healed up very quickly.
@Betsy is dealing with haypoke at the moment with her Velvet

Ok . I'm going to keep checking on him. If it is a hay poke. This is the first time ive dealt with it.

It’s not serious unless it’s ignored so don’t worry.
Putting the eye drops in can be awkward depending on how cooperative the piggy is.
I always included a piece of cucumber or other veg as a bribe.

Hes squealing like a baby when i look at his eye. He hates being handled and keeps biting his own paw. Hes done this since he was a pup . Silly boy.

Ill call the vet tomorrow morning. Hope i can get in. Def not taking him anywhere else.

Update. Bernies fine. I found a big piece of sloppy hay in the top of bernies eye. I washed my hands well and got it out with my fingers. Thank goodness 😣 and thanks to everyone for the support.

But i will keep checking him incase of a poke still

Still might be worth a vet check in case the eye has ulcerated.
Sounds worse than it is but that is what the eye dye shows up
Ok yea def will call tomorrow. Glad i found the hay though. Think i may need to get a c and c cage soon. Bernie is huge! Biggest boar ive had i think lol

I always have Brolene eye drops handy as they always do these things at weekends. Can really help, especially if you’ve caught the piece of hay and just want something to sooth the eye. Do not tell the pharmacist it’s for an animal as they won’t sell it to you!
