Today during outside time, berry started chirping!! It kinnda scared me because I have always been told that it only happends whenstarled badly. But she went on for about 10 mins! And only stoped because I picked her up! I got a video to! But it's on my camera so I will post later on tonight! :)

I think chirping is one of the sounds that we don't really know exactly why they do it. I have also heard that it is usually a distressed noise; however, I have had five pigs that have chirped (that I am aware of anyway) and none have appeared to be in any distress at all when doing so.

I've had two that simply seemed to love to chirp and did so quite often. One would chirp whenever the urge hit her. The other made a habit of singing to the entire herd in the middle of the night.

It seems like, from the reaction of all the other piggies that it may be a traditional sign of danger or distress - speaking from an evolutionary standpoint, as they tend to freeze and look on guard when a piggie chirps; however, with my pigs that chirpped on a regular basis, the rest of the herd reacted a little differently, sometimes getting excited, popcorning, etc.

I suppose I'm of the opinion that it is a noise that is not a common part of their collective vocabularies anymore and perhaps, for this reason, it can mean different things in different situations and circumstances, and even dependent upon the piggie.

I'm very interested in seeing your video.

thanks :)

here the video. sorry it took me so long to post it, i had a friend staying with me for a week and i was busy.

Omg that is fantastic! Is that the singing noise they rarely make? I had one piggie do that once & I thought "What on earth?" lol! Brill! :))

I've only heard it once from any of mine, Megan. That was in 2009 when I had her inside during the time she was about to give birth. She was obviously distressed then because I took her away from Daisy and she was pregnant. So I believe it's a random warning or distress signal. I honestly would never want to hear it from my pigs ever again. Just from their body language alone people should be able to see they're not relaxed in any of the videos you watch of a pig chirping.

But having said that, I've heard my pigs make their grumbling and squeaking 'angry' sound when they're popcorning, and I thought that was supposed to be displayed when they're happy? I don't know *shrugs* lol

What a delightful mental image. Not so delightful if you were trying to sleep, I guess!

hahahha looks like your piggy thinks he's a birdy.
Doll, I love your avatar.

xoxchickletxox, can you post the sound as a .wav file? I can't load Flash onto this computer just yet (older computer, won't accept the upgrade until I tweak a few things), so I can't see the video, but I can play sound files like .wav files. I would like to see if this is one of the noises that Redemption has been making. I call some of the sounds "burbling" but it might be chirping. I could probably see a .wmv file if you can make one of those.

It never bothered me. I loved it and the herd did too!

Here is a link to a site that contains most of the common piggie noises, including chirping. Don't know if you'll be able to play them, but thought it was worth a shot, Pat. Enjoy, if you are able to get a listen!

I have no clue how to change the file type sorry! I have somthing that shows differnt nosies and it deff was chirping. Now I know there is issues with her, one is she is blind, and there is a few other issues I'm guessing to.
