Hi all,

quick update on Bertie. He's been doing really well since his last episode in this section. Since Friday night he's been in some discomfort passing his stools and has suffered some loss of apetite as a result. More dramatically, he's lost around 100g. He seems to be happy eating all sorts but not much at a time. I'd like to cheer him up with a trip to the garden but the weather is awful. :(
The run is not always a place to have fun. Our boys like to be entertained otherwise they just hide in their little house...mallethead How can I possibly cheer him up?

Let him watch "Deal or no deal" on the tv.
It is one of the best comedy programmes there is.

hmmmm, does that mean I have to watch it too? cos i just don't like it. What about JK show? :))

honestly though, he really likes watching sports on tv, especially football and cricket. I think it's the colour green that attracts him... He's not so fussed with Formula 1, say.:{

Can you go out and cut him some grass (or use some cubes of his favourite treat instead) and "hide" it in different places, loosely wrapped in a hankie. Or on top of something, or underneath... So he has to go and lok for it? Or tie an empty toilet roll filled with hay or grass to the chicken wire. Or thread a piece of carrot and let that hang from the wall, so he has to work a bit to get it.

Or drape an old towel or tea towel over a chube on the floor in their cage/hutch with a treat hidden underneath.

grass seems to be a success so far

Good! Just try different things (always best with food) on different days to keep him challenged.

he's lazy though... sometimes he'll noy eat if we hand it to him, or drink if we take the bottle to his house. But I'll try.

You could also get a seed tray, water and sprinkle it with cut and come salad mix and/or birdseed mix and cover with clingfilm until sprouting. Either put the tray in when plants are a decent size or give as a special treat every now and then.

Bertie's not too good, he's off his food again and hasn't had much to drink.

I've given him 0.2 ml of Junior calpol, 3 ml of dioralite (the hydrating stuff he likes) and 6 or 7 ml mushed up pellets that he bites off the syringe...

Confused over what's wrong with him, he's hopping a little on back legs and i'm hoping it's not another bladder issue.

Help anyone?

If you are worried, it might be best to take him to the vets for a quick x-ray (without GA). He sounds like he is in pain. Have you got some painkiller at home?

I am so sorry that Bertie is not well. It is sometimes so difficult to figure out what is plaguing him, if the signs are not clear!

yes, I've given him 0.2 ml of calpol. That was this morning.

I really don't kknow whether the vet will help...

he's off his food, doesn't want water and sleeps lots.

I'm taking him to the vet's tomorrow.

:(

You can give another dose of Calpol if necessary, MrsM - giving painkillers twice a day is usually perfectly acceptable.

Have you had any checks on his "tumour" since it was diagnosed? Charlie went on for 9 months after his kidney tumour was discovered, it grew hugely in that time so he got progressively worse - eating a bit less, sitting around more, hopping short steps instead of walking etc. He was always bright and happy though, it wasn't until his last day when he suffered a stroke that he could no longer continue.

After his long struggle, Bertie passed over to the Bridge only a matter of minutes ago. Mrs M and I would like to thank everyone who has offered advice and support, especially over the past few months. Bertie was such a special boy and I'm sure, given time, we'll be able to post a fitting tribute to him. It is very difficult to add any more at this stage.

Just to add to Maxy's post, we are very sad indeed but find comfort in the fact that we were with him till the end.
Special thank yous to Vickyt, Pigglywinksrachel (I know you're thinking about us), CCC4 and Alcesterpig among others who have offered advice and support for the past 5 months.

Thank you and rest in peace my little broon baby...

So sorry to hear this, what a little fighter he was. Thinking of you both and of course Bertie. x

I'm gutted that Bertie has died! How sad for you. He has been struggling, but somehow always soldiered on.

At least he could go in the comfort of your love; the best way imaginable.

I am so very sorry you lost him. When their times comes, all you can do is be there for them, as you were.

Rest well, beautiful Bertie. xx

many thank yous to every body for their support. We had to go away on family duty and had to leave Finlay alone with the neighbours only hours after he lost his 'mentor'.

Bertie was a fighter but we knew that he couldn't go on forever with the lump in his belly always on the back of our minds. We hope he passed peacefuly, in the arms of his daddy whom he loved dearly.

Thank you also to the North-West rescue girls for offering their help to find Finlay a new friend, in the end, we adopted one of Helen's, a wee Scottish baby boar who will have his own thread very soon.

MrsM and the family M

Bertie is now in his forever resting place, next to Rene, his life-long friend whom we lost in November, in our garden which they both enjoyed so much.
We miss you both so much...
