I should have gone to an exotics vet in the 1st place !

1st vet only did 1 X-ray . Exotics vet did more views and took bloods. Exotics vet said the amount of gas visible on X-ray is normal for a guinea pig under gas anaesthesia. He also palpated her while under anaesthetic . There are several lumps in her abdomen - which are either cysts or tumours. The blood results will be back next week.

It sounds like this vet is much more on the ball. Keeping my fingers crossed that the lumps are treatable.

Sounds like a much better visit. I hope the lumps turn out to be nothing sinister. They can get harmless fatty lumps which don't need treatment usually.

Sorry to hear this - has she been spayed at all ? just wondering as I have a great exotics vet who could feel Noodles ovarian cysts where as my usual vet couldn't - if it is ovarian cysts a spay done by an experienced exotic vet is usually quite straight forward and there is less chance of an abscess developing than with a neuter on a boar - I also have a 5 year old sow who is covered in lumps under her belly - but this has been tested and she is simply an old lady laying down fat cells - hopefully all will be fine - big hug to you x

Thank you Tan . Bess hasn't been spayed. I suspect she is an old girl . She was rescued so I don't know her age. I am so happy I asked for a 2nd opinion as 1st vet wanted me to separate her - and had prescribed Baytril twice daily for a week. I have been reassured by exotic vet that she is not in any discomfort and can stay with Max and Sparkle.

Have you considered Cystese capsuals?lf if l remember corectly they somtimes slow down the prosses

Yes, it sounds suggestive of ovarian cysts Lisa. I have had piggies lose some weight with these but remain well. Have they checked her urine as its very common to have associated urinary problems x

I will wait for the vet to discuss blood results- I can discuss Cystese with him.

She's had blood tests so assume this will screen for necessary.

I am happy to take a urine sample in - what would you advise it is tested for ?

I believe Cystease is for bladder conditions & recurrent UTIs which I am not sure will help in your case unless your piggie has been diagnosed with them? Ovarian cysts can cause bloatedness/gas but what concerns me most is the possible slow down of her gut if the vet said she had a lot of faeces still inside her gut? If that's the case yhen I would have expected the Exotics vet to have started her on gut motility meds already x

Vet said gut looked good - i.e. plenty of signs she is eating foods with fibre. He didn't feel she was overloaded with faeces. I will discuss this with the vet at Bess's next consultation - which will be when the blood results come back.

Sorry to read that you are having such a rough time with Bess lately my dear :(
I hope you can quickly get to the bottom of her illness promptly. In the meantime, plenty of snuggles! Huge hugs hun :hug:

Thank you Tim .

She's not in any distress - which is a comfort to me .

Just a regular dipstick to look for signs of infection, glucose and blood. I always test my piggies urine if they lose weight. I can test a sample if you bring one next week x

Hi I haven't seen this thread for a while. I'm really pleased to hear the latest vet thinks Bess isn't in any discomfort. I know that helps you even if the weight loss hasn't yet been explained. It's always a worry when something seems wrong with a piggie but you are doing everything you can to get it resolved for both you and Bess. Hope the bloods results clear the mystery up. x

Thank you - I've just been watching her tuck into her supper - as happy as ever.

Update :

I was concerned over the weekend as Bess was continuing to lose weight. I have checked her weight today and noted a slight gain . The vet has booked her in for an ultrasound on Friday.

Not good news I'm afraid.

Bess had her ultrasound today. The vet has ruled out ovarian cysts and believes she has a tumour. He said he could arrange to have a biopsy taken - but this would require surgery .

I don't really want to put her through having a biopsy . she is back home now - as happy as ever and I am going to monitor her weight over the next few weeks.

Oh no I am sorry :( I suppose there is a chance it is a benign tumour though? And a biopsy would confirm that? If it was in her womb & that was removed she could make a good chance of recovery x

Vet thinks tumour is in her liver

Oh no :( I just lost one of mine & when the vet got her bloods back she said she thinks it was a liver tumour, although my piggy showed no symptoms except there was an odd smell whilst she was alive which has gone now :( I couldn't put my finger on what it was & I always thought it was my bladder pig but seems like it was her after all :( I am so sorry xx
