When you feed your piggies, do you stick to the best before dates on packs or not?

I must admit I don't always stick to them for the humans in the family :embarassed: But if something has gone too far over to give to the kids, I would still give it to the piggies as long as it wasn't obviously mouldy or horrid. Do you think that's OK?

I go buy if I wouldn't eat it I wont feed it to the piggies.

We always (humans) eat stuff past the best before date anyway if it seems okay so yeah.

Best before dates don't need to be stuck to as rigidly as use by dates. However, I take the view that if I wouldn't eat something then I won't feed it to my animals. I have started popping into Tesco most evenings to buy the veg they are selling off cheap because it has reached its best before date. However with 20 piggies and a bunny it doesn't last long enough to go off! :)

i only give my piggies fresh stuff, if i wouldnt eat it then its not good enough for my piggies lol

i sometimes by cheap stuff off the seconds counter at morrisons for them, like i got a box of cranberries some were going a bit manky but some were fine so i just picked out all the good ones for them and chucked the horrible ones away, i dont mind doing that but like if the cabbage has gone yellow (not mouldy) then i dont give it to them as they only eat dark coloured leaf ::)

I never feed anything to my piggy if it's past its best before date - even if only a day or two. I just think you can never be too sure and I would feel so dreadfully guilty (and rightly so) if he had an upset tum or any other illness. He can't read the dates for himself and relies totally on us to provide good wholesome nutrition.

but we (me and my family) always eat stuff past the best before date and we're never ill so don't see why the piggies can't have it if we would eat it :)

I did my food hygiene certificate a few weeks ago. It was explained how best before dates are only a guide and its fine to consume foods which have only just past this date if they look fine. However, use by dates are exactly what they say! You really shouldn't use food after that date.

Therefore Jane, what you and your family are doing is just fine! :)

Same as above my auntie was telling me that BUT we never eat anything over the BBE date but my piggys do though as i give it to them :)

I eat anything as long as it looks, smells and feels alright ;D . I like to think of it as preperation for later life when I start living on my own ;D

I work in a retail food outlet and the above is correct. :)

whats the best before date ::)
If it looks fresh I eat it and if I can eat it the birds, sugar glides, bearded dragons and piggies eat it

I would not eat meat over the date.

Veg fine I think.

If I would eat the salad etc then the guys have it.
