is there a best food?

what do * feed and how much?

I'm not sure what the best food is, a food specifically for guinea pigs is essential as they cannot produce their own vitamin C so guinea pig food usually has it added. Rabbit food can contain anti-biotics and things which aren't suitable for piggies.

A lot of people find that a nugget food is the best value for them as some guineas will selectively eat from a muesli type food meaning they end up throwing quite a lot away.

I'm currently feeding my two Supreme Science Selective which is a complete nugget. I paid about £11 for 5 kgs, and they never leave any of it. However I'm currently mixing in a little of Oxbow Cavy Cuisine into their food as it has a lower calcium rate, this is a bit more expensive at £13.99 for 4.5 kgs (£9.89 for £2.25).

Because Coco is under six months old, they have their bowls topped up all the time but when is older I will reduce the amount of dry food they get to about an egg cup each per day.

I think Burgess Excel goes down quite well with a lot of piggies and is pretty much the same as the Pets at Home nuggets. Wagg Optimum is another good one I believe.

When I was interested in using Science Selective originally I sent Supreme an email, explaining I would like to try it but would like to check they liked it first and they sent me some samples:)

I feed my guineas Burgess Excel, Blackcurrent & Oregano. Have been feeding them this food for about 3 years, I was testing them out on other feeds, but this one they actively beg for. They just really enjoy it. So it's gets a guinea thumbs for taste.

In terms of amount... I just always keep the bowl filled up. Obviously if any of them fixated on it I would have to regulate it, but they seem pretty good and they have never been over weight.

I normally feed mine burgess excel too (but the plain one). They love it, Pets at Home ran out so they currently have their own brand nuggets. They are eating it but not as actively keen as they are with the burgess one so I would recommend the excel. I have also been using it for years on many different pigs and it always goes down well.

I also just keep the bowls topped up for my two boys alongside unlimited Hay and carrots (they are carrot crazy!) or apples everyday and they seem happy and are not fat.

I would personally also recommend the nuggets rather than the mix as some pigs can be selective and just eat the bits they like and this may lead to vitamin deficiency I can imagine. It also means wasted food which I don't like.

Hope that helps

I posted on your other thread, but here it is again:

Unlimited hay, ideally timothy (which is the best for piggy guts), but other good quality hay will do as well (I do mix and match, so my piggies get different tastes to keep them interested and happy) - they will just have to eat a little bit more for the same result! Hay should be 50-80% of their daily intake. It is the best food to help them grind down their back teeth as well.

Good quality pellets, ideally without colourants ans seeds. Topped up until your piggies are 6-9 months old and have done most of their growing, then slowly reduced to about one handful per piggy per day.

50g/1 bowlful of mixed veg per piggy per day, in one ore two servings.
Ratewatcher's have composed a balanced diet according to the guidelines on the best medical website for guinea pigs. This should provide enough vitamin C for a normal guinea pig (pregnant piggies need double the amount).

Here is a list of what veg and fruit guinea pigs can eat. Please give fruit only every 2-3 days.

I hope that this helps you!
