what the cheapest but best thing I can put hay in to try and avoid eye pokes my baby has a bad eye again 3 rd time in 8 weeks I think from a hay poke

I use two cutlery drainers paid 1€ each, I have cut some piece of plastic and they work perfectly:

and if you are sure that your baby pokes his eye with hay, you can cut the hay in shorter strings. Maybe this will help...

I don't use anything, I just put two large handfuls of hay into a pile and flatten it down at the front of their cage. I change the hay twice a day. I haven't had any problems with them getting sick. I find hay racks and bags unsuitable. I don't like them as the hay can poke out, and piggys can be so desperate to get at the hay..it's scary. I used bags for a while and got rid of them as Fifi nearly got her head stuck. Plus I think it's more natural to them to have the hay underneath their mouths. If hay is above or close to eye level it's more likely to poke them in the eye.

I've been use a litter tray to put hay in and so far had hay stuck in eye and to infections since not sure if it's hay poke or something else but have to try something run low on funds for vet at mo with him bk and for so much

I guess @Bella123 is right, it is more natural keeping the hay on the floor and the pigs can also play with it and poo on it. The problem is the smell and the fact that they waste all the hay which afterwards they refuse to eat. My pigs have some hay on the floor and into the houses and some more into the racks and I see they go on eating only the hay into the racks, maybe because it is cleaner... Anyway, I see there are different kind of hay, some looks "softer" than other brands (and their preferred one is the one I have just produced on my own cutting the best grass by myself :)))

I use a large shoe box lid as a litter tray and put hay at one end and bedding at the other and change it daily. This way I don't waste much hay as any fresh hay that they haven't eaten when I change the bedding I put back into the clean tray. When I get to the bottom of the bag of hay I scatter the smaller strands everywhere and my piggies have no trouble cleaning most of it up. ;)

Mine have a 32litre underbed storage box full og ings hay from hay and straw. It is really soft.

I also have a poundland cat litter tray full og stalkier hay and i pick grass for them every day.

Hope you find a way to eliminate hay pokes. Very unlucky to have so many ...
