What hay do you feed your piggies?

We've tried P@H regular hay, which they ate grudgingly so has been relegated to bedding rolleyes . I asked for Timothy hay and the woman in P@H gave me Burgess Excel Fresh Forage which seems to be grass rather than hay :{ ? The piggies absolutely LOVED it though! We've tried Excel Herbage since then and they aren't as keen on this - it does seem to be drier and more kind of woody? It's nice & green in colour but it's much more straw-like than the other types we've tried. I'm worried they'll hurt themselves trying to burrow in it so we're keeping it in the hay rack and giving them the cheapo hay for bedding.

So we're a bit confused! Is the Fresh Forage ok for piggies (it only has a pic of a rabbit on teh bag, the Herbage has a piggy too) ? What is the best hay to buy?

I'd be interested in this too. I started off, when we got the girls about 5 weeks ago on P@h bog standard hay for bedding, with a good few handfuls of their timothy hay. I then moved on to another hay from a local independent pet shop, and have also bought some woodlands hay with carrot and dandelion to add a bit in each day.

I really have not a lot of idea what I'm looking for. I have seen the alfalfa king timothy hay, and see that is quite pricey, so guessing it's good stuff. Is it ok to use this in conjunction with other hay, will the piggies pick out the better stuff for eating?:{:)

I use the Alfalfa King Timothy hay for my lot of 8 piggies and they love it x) at £7.99 per bag for 1.8kg's worth of hay it isn't cheap - and a bag only lasts me around 5-6 days - however i would recommend it to anyone - it smells gorgeous and is ALWAYS lovely and green in colour (almost like fresh grass) and the strands are nice and long so it helps with wearing down teeth.

Ive tried mine on the woodlands new apple and carrot timothy hay, the burgess fresh forage and the burgess excel herbage - and they much prefer the alfalfa king hay to any other and i found i had a lot of wastage with them. I do however from time to time purchase pets at homes own brand timothy hay for variety and to break up the cost slightly.

The alfalfa king hay though is kept strictly to their hay racks :)) The only problem with switching to a more expansive quality hay is that pigs tend to get picky about the type of hay they will/wont eat :p

I get a big bag of meadow hay for £3.99 from The Range. Sometimes buy more expensive bag as treat but otherwise I use the meadow hay for food and bedding.

The best hay I have found is the hay that isn't vacumm packed like the hay a p@h and jollyes.

esk pets and my local pet shop sell hay in bags, and it is green, sweet smelling unlike some hay I have had:)

Try your small local pet shop they usually sell nice hay as a local farmer sells it to them fresh

My piggies all get meadow hay from the local farm store with a few handfuls of the 'posh stuff' on top (excel forage, herbage (dandelion and marigold I think it is) and the Birch bark herbage).

I'd like to find more timothy hay for them as the herbages (which has lots of it in) goes down really well but at £4.50 a bag for the 1kilo Dandelion and Marigold, and 9 piggies, it's far too expensive to feed them just that! Which is why we get meadow hay most of the time, £2 for a huge bag or £6 for a bale if we have space. That said, I prefer the bags because it's usually fresher and smells so nice! :)

The forage is simply dried grass I think, it's fine for piggies, my lot love it! :)

Meadow hay is a fave with my crew and I pay around £8 for 4kg so is cheap and they love it. Usually order online and paid £20 for 12kg recently on offer.
Have got Timothy Western and Timothy Alfalfa King which the little blighters won't touch :{ so use it in their litter trays.
When my boar was poorly a few weeks ago and would eat nothing, we tried all kinds of hay and my OH bought Asda's really cheap brand - guess what ?/ They all adore it rolleyes
