Hiya,

Just wondering what brand of hay everyone in the UK feeds their pig?

I dont like any of the pet shop hay as its too dusty and not willing to pay £40+ for 2kg of hay as that would only last me like 2-3 weeks.

Just wondering what is the best dust free hay other pigs have..?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there Fizz, Rhubard and Custard!

My favourites are timothy hay from the haybox website, which comes in 2.5/5/10 kg boxes, and meadow hay in big bags from the local animal/horse supplies shop.

(For 2 pigs) I order 2x 5kg of timothy blend from Hay box. Approximately ever 2 months. Cost £24.95. I'll buy something cheap as well just to get free deliver at over £25

I use Haybox - cant recommend it highly enough. Fantastic dust free hay, really great quality.

I have five animals though so I get through a lot of it - I buy 20kg (2 x 5kg boxes of meadow hay and 2x 5kg boxes of soft Timothy hay) every 3/4 weeks.

Mine like meadow hay. Although I have w feeling the girls prefer timothy.

I go to my local Farm Shop and buy a big farm bale of hay for around £6. It lasts my 3 old gals between 3-4 months and is excellent quality. The problem is it's very large and you need somewhere to store it.

I buy a couple of bales from a local farm which last me 3-4 months, as well as a monthly batch of Natures Own hay. All mine love both of them and they don’t cost the earth!

I used to buy Nature's Own (search for Nature's Own Pets, if you just look for Nature's Own you'll get directed to a supplement company), Comet loved it.

I have tried several hay delivery services all prices around the same amount of £20ish for 5kg
Hay box - Timothy very good, meadow a bit inconsistent and the boys stopped eating it.
Healthy herby -Timothy very good, they also donate to rescues when you purchase!
The Happy Hay co (our current supplier) meadow hay - very good!
All have been pretty good across the board, we have to have meadow hay due to my allergies hence why we now use happy hay co!
5kg lasts my 2 boys 4-5 weeks!

My 3 are obsessed with Burgess feeding hay with meadow herbs. 🙈They even refuse their "sweet green hay" from Natures own for the Burgess instead. Its £16 for 3kg from Burgess. Or £13.99 from zooplus

I second Hay Box. My boys have the 50/50 Timothy and Meadow Hay boxes. It’s always been fantastic quality.
They deliver super fast too. If I order, it’s here in a couple of days

I have tried so many and always go back to Dust Free Hay | Hay for Rabbits Have been using them now for over 10 years and never had a bad batch. Mine absolutely love it.

They also get Oxbow Orchard Grass as a foraging hay (not for lying in and pooping on as I so often remind them!) Also Hay Experts do a lovely Green Wheat Foraging Hay which has lots of ears of corn and they love that, again a special hay for eating and is too coarse for lying in.

They also like Oxbox Timothy Hay and Green oat hay...oh and a handful of Readigrass with their dried herbs at night for bedtime foraging...(gawd they sound spoilt dont they)

Mine just get the Pets at Home hay. There is a Meadow/Timothy mix that is soft enough for the bedding but they also like to eat it, and they do a Timothy with carrot and apple for £4 a bag that they really like despite it looking a bit brown and unimpressive! I actually pick out the massive lumps of dried carrot and some of the apple bits but its the hay they like as it's quite course. Burgess do a 'long stem feeding hay' which is described 'for rabbits' but I think it's just because the stems are really pointy and a bit of a risk to eyes. They love it but I only give it in open areas so they don't burrow in. I tried lovely local organic farm-fresh hay before and yes, they loved it, but my piggies live indoors and all sorts of little critters crawled out of it and one type - which was totally harmless - infested my dining room! So we went back to bagged hay from pet stores. They didn't really care - but they do like a variety x

I'll put my hands up for Timothy-hay.co.uk. My girls love it and its a good price at £19.50 for 8.5Kg. Plus they do saturday delivery if you order by 2pm on friday. Can't fault them at all.

We used to use Hay Box but had problems with delivery 3 times in a row. We are currently using Timothy-hay.co.uk, brilliant service and next day delivery. We get meadow hay from Natures Own, some of mine don't like the green meadow, we just get the ordinary meadow.

I do exactly thesame but with the soft cut.

Haybox also do a sample pack that you only pay shipping for so you can see which the piggies prefer.

I use to get natures own but found pulling hay from a bag messy and difficult with it being tightly packed in the bag. I also found it dustier than haybox. Piggies eat more of the haybox than natures own and get more excited when I put fresh in too

I occasionally buy a small bag of burgess with dandilion and marigold or whatever else in. Just for a bit of variety. They occasionally enjoy its weird woody dead texture...

I recently bought a bag off amazon from a brand called select, lovely hay and very green, but its soooooo dusty and piggies still prefer their haybox.

Aaargh I'm giving up on haybox, which is a shame as their timothy hay is the best I've ever come across.
I had many boxes of dark brown, waxy meadow hay, I eventually let them know, showed them photos and they agreed that wasn't premium hay, and they refunded for some of the boxes, good customer service. But now the meadow hay is like straw, it isn't green hay as described and the piggies aren't interested. So it's just very expensive bedding. The meadow hay is on the left, in the photo below. So I'm taking @rp1993 's recommendation and have ordered some hay from the happy hay company. I hope it'll be OK 🤞

It’s so interesting, because my lot are all really enjoying the current batch of meadow hay (they also get the soft Timothy)

And you're not that far away from where I live in the country, so there's no reason for it in terms of supply chain or whatever 🤔 We did get 2 lovely green boxes between the musty brown and the bleached blonde hay, but definitely more bad than good now.

It’s very odd isn’t it! But we had the same issues of it been super brown and the boys not eating it!
This is the happy hay co meadow hay, I find there are a few bits in the bottom of the box but the bulk of it the boys to love! C331A549-D80A-4D5B-AED4-B79C28E8BE8D.webpD29D738A-F00D-4886-849C-0A93EB38EC54.webp

The latest box I got was was Happy Hay after seeing it on here and I was really disappointed. I got a couple of sample packs too and gave them the meadow today. I’d not done it before because I had opened the bale of meadow and so had put it to one side but whilst tidying I thought I’d add it.

When I’d opened the box I was shocked. It looked like straw, really stalky. I pondered posting here but don’t like being negative about places so thought I’d see if anyone else said the same. The sample though was totally different, really grassy and just what I had expected. Anyway, long story short I emailed this afternoon, sent some pictures and it seems I got a box of Timothy by mistake. It’s going to be replaced tomorrow and I can donate the remainder of the incorrect stuff.

So I’m happy, a mistake was made and the company are sorting it out! Excellent customer service. Hope they like the new stuff!

Glad you found them helpful @Tigermoth
Mine loved the sample from Happy Hay. I've not ordered from them yet as I'm having trouble with paypal and they only take paypal payments.

I totally agree this batch of meadow hay is more like straw. I’m not happy with it and neither are the boys. I’m off tomorrow to an equine supply store near me to see if I can get a bale of meadow hay. I don’t want to order again off Haybox as it’s expensive if it’s not any good. I know they will say it’s a natural product so you can’t know the quality.

Oh dear. After a few boxes I complained as they advertise premium hay and it wasn't, they agreed with me on seeing the photos. Hope you can get hold of a bale. I started ordering from happy hay company for meadow which seems great.
