I always buy compressed hay from the pet shop, I don't know why it's just always been what I've bought. I tried a bag of hay before (not compressed) and it gave Barry and Elsie a horrible mite/infection thing which unfortunately Elsie died because of it. So I went back to compressed hay because I've never had a problem with it, but I was thinking about it and I don't know whether its better to buy hay in the bags or compressed? Why is either better? I wouldn't buy bags from that pet shop again but I can go to another pet shop if it's better for my guinea-pigs.

I tried a bag of compressed hay once and hated it. It was all short pieces of hay and because of this it was no good for burrowing- it just sat flat in the bottom of the cage. It didn't have a fresh smell either. I guess it probably depends on each brand but I think it's definitley worth trying something else to see what it's like. :)

Due to the harshness of the hay I have purchased previously, I have recently purchased hay from the local farm. Unfortunately, the hay I have purchased is still somewhat harsh, but it is fresh and our boys love it. On the other hand, we are concerned about mites etc. However, the farm has cavies and other small animals they give the hay to, and they are all fine.

Because of the concerns you have about mites and infestation I would recommend you get Oxbow, Alfalfa king of maybe the dust free hay Co as all have been treated and are likely to be free of Mites - esp the first two kinds because of strict import laws.

Steer clear of pet shop, excel etc hay.

Compressed hay is okay for a treat but you need long strand for teeth health and compressed wont do that long term. The three mentioned above will.

Ok thank you, I'll try and get some other hay for them
