Best Nuggets To Give Guinea Pigs

mine are on supreme science selective. currently 20% off at p@h

@helen105281 has been doing quite a lot of research into this. I think that currently her recommendation is Bunny (for guinea pigs) available from ZooPlus.

It isn't as cheap as some other nuggets though. There is a JR Farm one sold by zooplus which also seems quite good and which is more comparable in price with Burgess Excel or Science Selective.

Burgess Excel is very popular and, I think, a good food (although not as good as the ones from zooplus). I would avoid the blackcurrant flavoured ones though as they contain molasses which are not great for piggies. The one with mint is the best one.

i think because they don't need many, aslong as you stick with a pellet rather than a mix, then you're basically ok. i feed oxbow cavy cuisine pellets.

I've used Pets at Home's own nuggets, Harringtons nuggets, Mr. Jonhson's nuggets and I'm currently using Asda's Guinea Pig nuggets (very good, you get a lot and it's only £2, the nuggets look pretty much the same as Pets at Homes!)
My Cookie has pretty much adapted to new nuggets easily, Cream will have a little bit of the old stuff mixed with the new stuff for a few days then he's fine but actually adapted to Asda's straightaway and left all of his Mr Johnson's nuggets in his bowl!

My young get a mix of complete pellets, Burguss excel, science selective and Beaphar nature. My adults get just the science selective. But I only feed the adults very small amounts of pellets, and loads of Timothy hay, and veg as one is a tad over weight. For years my free rangers always did very well on Burguss excel, but they were in a huge run. My boys are inside in hutches.

I use PAH nuggets for Si and Joe but as a colleague I guess I'm a bit biased XD My store feeds all our adoption guineas on it and they seem to do well :3 Simon-pig and Mr. Joe really like it, so it must be quite tasty too :D

We moved ours onto Burgess from P@H with the belief that it was better for them as we'd heard good things. Our piggies enjoyed them for about half a year then decided nah, we're not having this. Billy and Cupcake just refused to eat them! Swapped them back onto P@H and, so far, they've been fine once more. Silly creatures!

My pigs eat Oxbow pellets and always seem to enjoy them. I either order them on amazon or go to a PetSmart nearest to me which is about 45 minutes away.

I recommend Bunny as mine are doing so well on it. I am in the process of preparing a sticky of all of the available pellets though, it is just taking a while due to work commitment etc.

This is the Bunny

I have just recieved my first bag of this; am I right in thinking that I introduce this gradually to wean them off the pets at home nuggets they are currently on? They both seem to like them.

Yes you make changes gradually to avoid stomach upsets.

Okay, I am trying my piggies on the bunny and although they ate some initially they are now snubbing their noses at it. I am mixing it with p@h pellets but they pick these out and throw their bowl off the feeding shelf when there is only bunny in it. I have seen them do it and it is so fuñny but the food isn't cheap. If they eat it I don't mind the cost but its a waste if they wont eat it. I decided to trya change as their wee has been leaving white deposits. Any advice appreciated.

I sympathise with you. Mine hated bunny so I switched to vitakraft. I just hope they start to like bunny eventually.

My four youngest piggies were all fed Wagg crunch when I got them so I continued with that. Then later I tried to switch them to Excel, but they all avoided it. So I then slowly switched them to Harrington's , the pelleted form of Wagg muesli. They empty the bowls every time. My two pairs of oldies are on Harrington's and Excel, although one pair are ignoring their bowl of Excel and are just eating the Harrington's.

so is the JR farm nuggets good? I havent read much about them but have wanted to know more. my boys are on the burgess blackcurrent which i didnt know wasn't good cuz of the molasses! so that needs to be changed

I haven't tried them yet but am about to put an order in so happy to let you know.

If you're swapping from the excel blackcurrant, you might find it easier to move first to the "plain" ones with mint in (that don't have the molasses). I've done that very successfully and quickly with ours that came to us having been fed the blackcurrant one with their previous owner.
I imagine it will be less of a change then to move to one of the even better ones.

Lol made me laugh. I use excel nuggets and i bought the oregano/blackcurrant ones last time too and did a mix as originally they used to eat these so i thgt they might like variety. They barely ate the oregano ones and one of my piggies, Benji (sometimes Snoopy too), would just throw the bowl left with them and it would end up on the floor. He sometimes manages to even throw the water bottle on the floor when it's nearly finished!

I'm not sure if this is common behaviour but I had assumed they were just looking for scraps under the bowl or is it that they r pissed and trying to communicate with me they r hungry as this is how I interpret it now after it happened so often? Lol

Oh and u mention the wee leaving a white stain..I though that was normal? I have also cut down significantly on the spring greens and only give them 6g each a day as opposed to a third/half leaf each twice a day as I'm aware it does have lots of calcium in it.

Thanks @PiggySmitten i would love to know how you get on with the JR farm one. I read a little on the website about them and do sound really good. I will be needing to buy more pellets soon so will get the mint ones and mix them for a week or so. Thanks!

I feed Cavy Cuisine wonderful for pigs with bladder sludge since is made from Timothy hay and doesn't contain lecine/alfa.

Vitakraft emotion are second best.

Jesus! It seems that the pellets that are the best for the piggies are extortionately priced too. For just £5 more than the 4KG Vitakraft you can get a 10KG bag of Burgess Excel Nuggets. Why are they priced so high?! Is it because they are German/Dutch brands with not as many sales outlets online?

I would imagine they cost more due to using better quality ingredients. They are not bulked up with cheap things.
