i was going to start growing my own veg and herbs and things but not sure which ones are the best ones to grow?

especially surviving a long time in rubbish weather?

i mean veg and herbs for my piggies

Glad you just said that, as thought you ment for yourself then! ;) ;D

yeah i thought so thts y i added tht bit in the end so i dont confuse people :)

well we had sucess with cabbages, we still have 2/3 growing outside as the grow over winter..

i found cucumbers to be a good plant to grow very easily but you need the room and your best starting them on a windowsil, as they grow very high and out you need space, and my melon plant grew but i put it in too late in the year so got no fruit,. carrots are nice and easy, as are peas (dont buy seeds just use dry peas you can get in a packet from supermarket for making broth etc thats what i used and i got pea plants :)

swiss chard is a good one for the piggies and it keeps on growing, well mine has anyway lol thats easy you dont need to do much with it, its quite hardy :) mine like the rhubard chard (red swiss chard)

we have just bought a grape vine to grow up the side of the house, and were attempting peppers, sweetcorn, brocolli, cabbages, potatoes, cucumbers, melon, courgette, parsnips, peas, carrots and a few other things this year :)

thanks i will keep my eye open 4 seeds and other things and hopefully will be a success

if you go to Planet Guinea (Karens website) they have a great selection, seeds which can be grown in and outside. good prices too :)

The seeds in my shop are the ones I feed my own guineas. They are all selected especially for guineas and come with hints and tips for feeding and growing. Each month I send out a complimentary sample (Organic Cereal Grass for January). I don't grow veg because its cheaper to buy in the shops :) Herbs don't grow well with me and again its cheaper to buy them in the shops (for me anyway :) ) I have different grasses, indoor and out, and some herbage.

I am absolutely rubbish at growing anything, but I do rate Karen's seeds. Especially the grass for growing indoors. I only wish I was better at it! :o

Pelicano, we have a New Variety of Cereal Grass in that germinates better and quicker. I much prefer this to grow and its healthier for your guineas too as it has not been 'bred' for starch content- the guineas aren't fussy though and mine have no preference! I just prefer it to grow :) I like fast results ::)

Oh that sounds interesting - will it be obvious on your site which one I want, or has it replaced the other cereal grass? I really really want some easy to grow grass! :)

New Variety Cereal Grass, I don't know whether it should replace the other, its more expensive but so much better!

Less starchy. The organic one I sell is 'bred' for starch but this isn't :) Have packed your order, will post tomorrow :) Ten days after planting you should have grass ready to feed :)

Ooh great! :) Out of interest, what does the other original cereal grass grow like outdoors (obviously when warmer)? I still have some left.

It should grow well, the guineas love it when you let it grow into tall crunchy grass ::) Don't plant it with Timothy though or at least give it its own corner or space :)

I ordered some for the boys before xmas, but I forgot to order some seed trays... ::) ::) ::)so they are waiting in the shed still ;D ;D ;D ;D

I use yogurt pots and other plastic trays. It doesn't have to be a seed tray, if you are on my newsletter I'm doing about grass etc this wheek. I've stopped selling trays now, they cost more to post than for the tray and we all have plastic trays/tubs etc that we throw away every day. What seeds did you order?

I have some of the old trays you used to sell, but I also use those pots you buy herbs in and just put them round the house.

Sainsburys sausage roll trays and Organic Grapes trays are just the right size to go on the window ;) Good idea about the pots too, herbage would grow well in them because they're deep :)

25g of Cereal Grass grains in an old Muller yoghurt pot :) Use this as a general reference :) I haven't done this with Alfalfa yet, :) Oh and wash the yogurt pot out first! ;D

I'll have to give that a try - have only grown cereal grass in them so far. :)

I've been meaning to ask about the sunflower seeds. Are they easy to grow indoors (for a non-green fingered idiot like me! ;)) And should they be fed sparingly?

i got some off karen along with the cereal grass, but i put them in a safe place because when i lost charlie i took some out to trick him into his cage. but obviously whne i put things in a safe place i dont ever find them again :(

This batch take 2 wheeks to be mature enough to feed I've found. They are extremely nutritious @ 30% Protein. Feed with hay and other low in Protein foods for that day or so. They contain a lot of B Complex vitamins though. I don't find them as easy to grow as the New Variety Cereal Grass by a long way :)

I grow mine indoors and I'm not green fingered either :)
