Morning all! So I have my new babies now - they still
Seem so scared bless them. They are ok to be handled but as soon as put them back in hutch thu at dead! Oh I feel for them feeling so scared :(

Anyway....I'm going to buy some veg today what do you think is best? I have the list of veg on here but it's massive! Just wondered what you all found best for little ones? Also which is highest In bit c for them? X

I don’t think there is any best veg, it’s just important not to introduce too much too soon, just be slow and careful with what you try as it could upset their digestive system.

I think, but don’t quote me on it haha, that red bell peppers have the highest vitamin C content, but don’t worry about only using high vit c veg as its better to get a good variety and if your feeding a good pellet food then that should take care of alot of their vit c needs (not that fresh veg isn’t still important)

Thanks for your help....silly question but a bell pepper is just a normal pepper isn't it? Lol
I have out a piece of broccoli in with some pellets but they still haven't ventured to their food bowl :(

Hello. Don't buy everything on the list! Try three different veg a day, small portions and leave it in the hutch for a while if they don't eat it straight away. They need to build up their tastes just like normal children so need to try things more than once sometimes.

Do 3 varied veg - a watery veg, a high in vit c veg and a leafy veg each day to start with. Give them masses of hay, it will do their starting up digestions a great deal of good to eat lots of hay. And put small amounts of nuggets in their bowl at various times, it isn't good to leave lots in there as they will wee in all directions, but they do need the energy from them so will need topping up.

NB watery is things like cucumber or celery, leafy is cabbage or kale, and vit c is pepper or carrot. (Kale is also really high in vit c as well!) It is helpful if you can give them veg you would eat anyway, two little piggies are going to waste veg otherwise. And piggies will happily digest broccoli and cauliflower stem and leaves, bell pepper stems and seeds, celery leaves and so on. They have a much better gut for vegetables than we do, so they can eat the parts of the veg we can't eat. In fact, those parts are really good for them so don't feel you are hurting them by giving them broccoli stem!

I hope this helped, this is simply the approach I take to small piggies. If anyone has more/better advice please add on.

Great advice :) thankyou so much xx

I also take the same approach to mini pigs and start off offering them tiny bits of a choice of 3 or 4 veggies, I also feed a leafy green, carrot, pepper and something like cucumber of destringed celery. I change the selection over the following days but always offering a leafy green, this allows them to expand their palette just like children. I also try and find out the dried food they have been eating so I can introduce what i'm feeding slowly. They also have unlimited hay daily. I've not had any tummy upsets so far by following the above advice :)
