Having trouble getting scooby to take a suitable amount of critical care. Background info is he has a chest infection so is on baytril & has lost his appetite a bit although still seems relatively eager to try munching on stuff it tends to more be paper/card or hay, although he doesn;t seem to actually eat much.
He takes his baytril alright with ribenna but trying to do the same with the critical care mix goes down like a fart in a lift.
Just to make sure I'm doing it right at the minute i'm just putting the syringe in side of mouth, not too far at all, & squeezing slowly. A lot ends up down side of face..... With his wheezey bunged up breathing i didn;t want to just whack a load of stuff in his mouth where he seems to be breathing in thru mouth & out thru nose & make him breath in food.
Initially he seemed quite game for it & almost tried to eat the syringe. Now after 45ml of baytril/ribenna & a couple of 1ml syringes of critical care all he wants to do is mouthsome paper, card or whatever T shirt i have on, he's even mouthed my arm this morning so not sure what that should tell me, is he just wanting some solids to go with the more fluid based food or something else?
Also to check the 36g critical care pouch when mixed up with 2 parts of water, probably did a bit more on first batch, makes a few hundred ml? on pouch it says each pack of 36g is a daily dose for a 1.5kg rabbit so vets theory was he should be taking 2/3rds of this so I should be trying to get 5g of this, which is over 50ml of my current slop, in 4 times a day. Does this sound like the right kind of amounts? Like I say I think I made the first batch a bit on the runny side but seems like a lot to try & get down him. What is best technique for syringe feeding without causing too much distress?
Any tips gratefully received.
Previous vet on the other pig had said to try baby food as well which I may try tonight, any thoughts?
