ilovepiggies

I know there is probably a post regarding this somewhere else but I couldnt find it....

I want to bath my boys soon, I have the shampoo towels etc all ready I am just not sure of the best method...

Any tips I was just thinking :D in the washing up bowl would be easiest ...

I have bathed dogs and horses regualrly but you have alot more to work with there! :)

I would say that just be very gentle as it will be a whole new experience for them.

Make sure that you dip your elbow in the water to test the temperature before you put the piggies in. Ensure that it is warm but not hot.

Keep water and shampoo away from face and be very gentle around their donuts (bits)

Do one at a time as they might feel an urge to try and jump out and there will be water everywhere.

I do george and mildred in the bath together. The shower is on the gentlest setting and while I'm running the water over them I always have my hand there so that I can feel any change in temp. Mind you, if it gets too cold they just walk away from it ;D

Hi

I don't know about anybody else but this is my method

I usually put who ever is bonded with each other together in the bath - lets say Spike and Xander who are naughty little abby's

I use the shower head pre-warmed to a nice warm temp - ie like testing for a baby!

Put both boys in the bath and start by putting the water over their bottoms first so as not to shock them with it on their faces, then I work up their backs to the face - all the time telling them what good boys they are and how much mummy loves them!

Once they are nice and wet I use a well known shampoo and lather it on their backs and all over into a nice foam - then if their glands are a bit icky I use the swarfega at this point and rub it well in and around grease glands, when they are nice and clean I then rinse off using the same method of bottoms first, - I then wrap them in the way Gina from CCT showed me and let the towel soak up alot of the wet - at this point they are on my knee having a treat such as parsley etc
When they have had a bit of a rub down with the towel I put them back into a freshly made up cage where they usually popcorn away

I only use a hairdryer on any long haireds and only if they tolerate it

hope this helps

I do mine one at a time. I have two bowls - one for washing and one for rinsing. I use warm water as the others have said and GG shampoo. They all have a set of co-ordinating flannels and two little towels - purple for Riffy, blue for Scarby and green for Rocky!

I do mine at the kitchen sink I have 2 sinks one smaller, i fill washing up bowl with warm water and the smaller isnka s well put one pig in always keeping the water low enough so they dont go under, wash with a cup or hands then add shampoo and rub it in, try not to get any in eyes, then I rinse under the running mixer tap and alwasy keep your hand under in case of change of temp, then mine go in the smaller sink for a paddle and to finish them off, if long hair I snip it while damp as its easier long haired also get a final rinse in the big bowl refilled again, i worry about shampoo being left in and upsetting their skin lol,
then they get towel dried and sat in front of my dog dryer its a special one i brought that stands so you have both hands free to massage and rub them dry, in the summer i put a pen up in conservatory to let them dry naturally, then a good brusha dn anil check , check for lumps bumps and any thing else then back to a nice fresh run, ahhhhhhh perfect, I use GG shampoo lavender is perfect, and makes the sheds smell nice as well

How often do you wash your piggies, and what about babies?

Once a week for me. Bill was fond of sleeping in his own poo or on top of tomatoes or peppers.
He got filthy.

sounds like Rocky ;D

I do mine once a month (proper bath),but have to dunk feet, bottoms and bloomers quite often. ;D

I do full baths on mine every 6 weeks unless I'm going to a show then I'll bath them the day before. Bits and bobs feets and ears get done more regularly

I do mine in the kitchen sink. I have a washing up bowl and one of those rubber anti-slip bath mats that I put on the draining board. I fill the bowl with warm water and lower the pigs back end into it. I keep my hand underneath their chest so they're upright in the water and I thoroughly wet the coat. Then I take them out of the water and put them on the rubber mat and shampoo them. I use a toothbrush to clean their claws. I use the water from the bowl to rinse them off on the rubber mat and then put them back in the water to make sure their bellies are rinsed properly. I wrap them in a towel and dry them with the hairdryer.

Oh, before the boars go in the water I use swarfega to clean their grease glands.

I bathe all mine (2 at a time) in the kitchen or bathroom sink. Nice and warm water. I dip their bums in first and then they hold onto my hand with their front paws.

Then on goes shampoo, rub, rinse then out.

I constantly talk to them too.

They feel safer and don't jump around when they hold on :)

Oh thank you some great tips there I think I will give it a go this weekend.
I think tit should go ok as my OH will help me out!

I will report back!! :)

I always hold the guineas the whole time, never put them down in the water, so they feel reassred and don't panic and try to jump out and hurt themselves. If the water is cool enough or if I have a mixer tap available I wet and rinse under that as it is faster than dunking them and less stressful I think. Plus the rinse is more thorough. If using a sinkful to rinse I always rinse two or three times. I hold the guineas while the shampoo soaks into their coats too as if you wrap them in a towel it absorbs most of the shmpoo. Once the piggie is rinsed I wrap them in a towel and put them down while I do the next one. Then I towel them dry thoroughly and leave somewhere really warm until they are completely dry.

in the sink ( as hinted by Hils ) and rinsed in the bath in an inch of water then towel dried /hairdryer dried

that reminds me,i gotta bath some of them tomm :o

I have tried the washing up bowl and they do feel secure but they also kick water EVERYWHERE! :o The bets place I have ever found is the kitchen sink. I too hold them so they feel secure and wear scruffy clothes I dont mind getting wet for cuddles if the pig is stressing. Also a good idea to have plenty of towels at the ready and a towel lined carrier or boy incase you forget something and need to go get it! I use gorgeous guineas shampoos (www.gorgeousguineas.com) which are fab and seem to help keep the piggys calm as well as making them smell scrummy.

With boys don't forget the grease gland, you can clean it with swarfega... do that first then rinse and shampoo them. Its also a good time to do those intimate cleans ::) after bath is a good time for claws and I like blow dry my piggers on a low heat setting.

Good luck and enjoy! ;)

Well I still havent attempted yet but with all of these good tips I will be fine!
I will be doing it this weekend intime for Crimbo! :)
