It was the dreaded nail trimming time again yesterday as I noticed on the weekly check that nails were getting a bit long. When I went to trim Betsy's I noticed that she had split one of the nails on her back foot horizontally and it seemed to be in two pieces. I trimmed it as far down as I dared (of course this was her brown foot not the pale one so I had trouble seeing the quick). Her toe is not swollen nor is it hot and it doesn't seem to be troubling her at all. I had another look at it this morning and it still looks OK. Do you think I should take her for a vet check in case something nasty has entered the nail and got into her toe somehow? I'm unsure what to do. She is eating and pooping fine and being her usual lovely self but as she is in season this week is a bit off with me as she usually is so not change in behaviour either.

Nail file ! , but it up to you if you want to take her to the vets to make sure and give you peace of mind ,better safe then sorry !

It doesn't sound as if there's any infection there. Why not just try dipping in warm saline for a few days?

Maybe see how she goes this weekend... but a vets trip on Monday might be good for peace of mind xx

Great minds..... think alike!
Have you got a photo? I’ve not encountered this problem before & I hope it doesn’t sound funny but if you had a photo it will perhaps be good for me to learn.
My 3 girls have such different feet & paws...
Please tell Betsy that my nails have been splitting too & I’ve put it down to the cold weather so I wish her well & hope she’s ok. She’s beautiful x

Thanks Kath Betsy is beautiful. As soon as I saw her I thought "She's mine!" I haven't got a piccie of the nail. It was difficult to spot it just felt "wrong" in the clippers so I had a look before I clipped it. She didn't complain when I clipped it so I guess it didn't hurt.

Not heard of this before however Jemimah did manage to tear a nail out when she was a baby.
Maybe your gorgeous Betsy managed to damage her nail playing.
I’m in agreement with the others - keep an eye on her over the weekend and maybe a vet trip on Monday

Ahhh... what a good girl not to complain...
Cocoa would squeak in anticipation of having her nail clipped... never mind when it was actually clipped! x

Meg is exactly the same! She doesn't mind her back paws having the old pedicure it's just the manicure on her front paws she complains about.

Still split but her toe is still OK. @Tim tells me that one of his Piggies quite regularly has a split nail so it doesn't seem that . uncommon. I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully everything will be alright.
