Betsy's lost weight - vet visit Friday

Fantastic that she is now gaining Jacky. It is because she has such an amazing caring mummy!

Thanks Ruth even the OH is concerned (not that he will admit of course!) When I was syringe feeding Betsy last night his face went all gooey (Like when you talk to a baby) and he stroked her head lovingly and said "Hello Betsy" and he isn't questioning me feeding her either!

Last night I got her out to give her some syringe feed (11.5ml) and she had a few oats and some corn husk as mentioned above.

This morning I weighed her and after only 2 syringe feeds she has put on weight:yahoo: Not a lot but at its the first bit of weight in about 6 weeks. I have syringed fed Betsy twice this morning and each time she didn't want me to pull the syringe out of her mouth and was searching for it as soon as she had swallowed the last syringeful. I am reluctant to fully syringe feed her as she is still eating for herself and I want to encourage this. I will be feeding her 3 times a day, morning, noon and night for the time being and getting her out and giving her veggies on her own too.
YAAAYYY! Well done Betsy! Keep it up! :yahoo::yahoo::clap::clap:

Oh bless!

Glad that the beautiful Betsy managed to put on some weight. Good on you doing so much for her - she’s a lucky piggy.
Hope all goes well at the vets.

Merab has never had trouble finding food and she’s been completely blind with cataracts for some time now. I do tend to stick food right under her nose though but that’s more because she’s slower and the others are speed eaters.

Hope all goes well at vets today and you get some answers
I have left Betsy in the capable hands of Roxanne. She gave Betsy another thorough exam and said that she seemed a little bloated and as she had had a discharge about a fortnight ago, and the fact she was still losing weight after a course of Baytril and her temperature was up (Betsy wasn't happy about having the thermometer shoved up her bum!) Betsy may have Pyometra. Roxanne is giving Betsy a scan (hopefully conscious) and if she can't see anything with the ultrasound scanner or thinks there may be something sinister by what the ultrasound scan is showing its x-ray time. If she has to give Betsy and x-ray while she is still "under" Roxanne will give her teeth a good check too. Hopefully it's not Pyometra as I go away this weekend on a cruise to Guernsey and then I'm off in the caravan to Cornwall next Friday for 10 days and she will have to have her op before we go away. :(

Poor Betsy.
Hope it doesn’t prove to be anything serious.
If she does need post op care she can always come and stay with me while you’re on holiday.
I have a spare cage and I have a lovely vet here.

Look after yourself too - it’s worrying when a piggy is ill however Betsy is still young and she’s been very well looked after so there’s every chance of a good outcome.

I don’t think any guinea pig likes s thermometer being shoved up their bums - I’ve never heard Merab so vocal before or since she too had her temperature taken. I’m fairly sure it was the piggy equivalent of swearing at the vet!

Thanks Heather I may take you up on the offer. You are such a good friend!

Well just collected Betsy from the vet. The prognosis is either a blockage of some sort or Pyometra. Roxanne wasn't sure from the Ultrasound or the X Ray image. Betsy is now in the hospital cage in a snuggle sack. I have to keep an eye for wees and poops. Betsy has a bit of a gassy tummy but Roxanne is not keen to put her on gut motility drugs if there is a blockage. She hadn't pooped at all at the vet but that could be because of the anaesthetic they gave her for the x ray. They did syringe feed Betsy too. I have to phone the vet in the morning to update her on how Betsy is overnight and we'll take it from there. The vet did mention exploratory surgery to find out what's wrong I'm not sure I like the sound of that!

Such a worry - here’s hoping Betsy wees and poops for England tonight!

Look after yourself as well. Normally I would prescribe strong coffee but for you it’ll have to be a glass of wine!

Got everything crossed for gorgeous Betsy and @Merab's Slave is right, have a glass of wine-you’ve earned it.
Well I have a half a bottle of red left over from yesterday's barbecue!

So do I. So far nothing! but she has eaten a HUGE leaf spring greens!:)

Oh bless her! She's going through the wars! Let's hope she starts to improve quickly. Pyometra is a nasty thing :( Sending lots of healing vibes and of course tonnes of hugs for you and Betsy xx

Thanks Ruth! How can such a little pet cause so much anxiety?:hmm:

 forgot to mention that Betsy is now on Metacam in case she is in pain. The vet said she may not be eating cos she is in pain. 0.2 ml per day. She is due her first dose very soon. Another Metacam Junkie joins the list!

I’m so sorry to hear this, boy is she going through the wars. I have everything crossed for you, I hope they find the cause soon. Xx

Thanks everyone your support means a lot! We have been home nearly 4 hours now and still no poops or wees! Could it be the anaesthetic that is doing this? She is inhaling food at the mo so she must be hungry but its not coming out the other end?
